Substation Project Engineer
Hybrid – Lewisville, TX
The Substation Project Engineer is responsible for supporting the engineering, design, and execution of utility substation projects. This role serves as a technical resource for both physical and electrical substation design, ensuring project deliverables meet client requirements, industry standards, and safety regulations. The Substation Project Engineer collaborates with project managers, engineers, designers, and clients to successfully deliver projects on schedule and within budget.
PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Apply sound engineering principles and utility substation design standards to support project development and execution
Perform electrical design for relay upgrades, breaker additions and replacements, transformer replacements, RTU installations, and new substation projects
Perform physical design for bus additions, equipment installations, and greenfield substation projects
Develop project scopes, cost estimates, schedules, and engineering deliverables in coordination with Project Managers
Prepare technical specifications, equipment material lists, and procurement documentation
Review and oversee the preparation of engineering drawing packages from preliminary review sets through final construction issue
Manage project closeout activities including as-built revisions and final documentation
Coordinate with clients, utility personnel, manufacturers, contractors, and internal stakeholders throughout project execution
Conduct site visits, field investigations, and construction inspections as required to support project needs
Serve as Lead Engineer on assigned projects, providing technical guidance and oversight
Mentor and support Design Engineers, Designers, and CAD Technicians to ensure quality and consistency of deliverables
Maintain knowledge of utility substation design practices, industry codes, standards, and emerging technologies
Perform QA/QC reviews of engineering packages to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance
Support multiple concurrent projects while maintaining project schedules, budgets, and quality expectations
Attend and lead internal and external project meetings as required
Travel as necessary to support project and client needs
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution
Minimum of 5 years of experience in utility substation engineering, design, and construction
Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred
Working knowledge of project scheduling software and spreadsheet applications
Knowledge of applicable electrical engineering codes, standards, and utility practices
Experience supporting utility transmission and distribution substation projects preferred
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize competing deadlines
PREFERRED SKILLS/ABILITIES:
Strong technical knowledge of utility substation design, construction, and engineering standards
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively with clients, vendors, and project teams
Strong project planning, organization, and coordination abilities
Experience mentoring and developing technical staff
Ability to efficiently utilize engineering software, tools, materials, and resources to support project success
Strong attention to detail with a commitment to producing accurate, high-quality engineering deliverables
Ability to adapt to changing priorities and project requirements in a fast-paced environment
Commitment to maintaining safety, quality, and client satisfaction throughout project execution

Salary: $130,000 – $150,000 annually, dependent on experience, qualifications, and competencies
