Position Summary
Screen Innovations and Shade Innovations are seeking a hands-on Sr. Design Electrical Engineer to lead the electrical design, development, integration, validation, production transition, and in-service support of shade and screen electrical and control systems. This role owns system-level electrical architecture and benchtop development across motor controllers, PCB/PCA assemblies, power supplies, low-voltage I/O, communications hardware, lithium battery systems, battery-management systems, charging solutions, sensors, and related electrical subsystems.

The successful candidate will combine strong electronic hardware design with the accompanying embedded controls software required to operate, test, and mature the hardware, particularly motor-controller firmware. This engineer will build and validate integrated benchtop systems, prove electrical and control architectures, and partner with Software Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Procurement, Manufacturing, Quality, suppliers, and contract engineering and manufacturing partners to bring products from concept to a production-ready state.

This individual will also support the hardware evolution and sustainment of the Screen Innovations and Shade Innovations controls ecosystem, including existing and future communications devices and motor platforms. The role requires broad product understanding from the electrical, power, control, and hardware-interface perspective, along with strong familiarity with the development and integration of small tubular motor systems.

Primary Responsibilities
Electrical System Architecture & Benchtop Development
• Own system-level electrical architecture for motorized shade and screen control products, including block diagrams, power budgets, interface definitions, electrical requirements, and design trade studies.
• Design, assemble, operate, and troubleshoot functional benchtop systems integrating small tubular motors and other motor technologies, motor controllers, power supplies, batteries, BMS and charging circuits, communications boards, sensors, harnesses, and other electrical subsystems.
• Partner with Mechanical Engineering to transition validated benchtop designs into final product packaging, addressing component placement, enclosure interfaces, heat transfer and thermal management, airflow or conduction paths, serviceability, and environmental requirements.
• Translate product requirements into practical, reliable, serviceable, cost-effective, and manufacturable electrical solutions.
• Support the electrical and hardware architecture of existing and future systems and motor platforms across the Screen Innovations and Shade Innovations controls and motor ecosystem.

PCB/PCA & Electronic Hardware Design
• Design analog, digital, mixed-signal, power-management, protection, sensing, and microcontroller-based circuitry for control products and electrical subsystems.
• Create and review schematics, PCB/PCA layouts, component selections, bills of material, fabrication packages, and assembly documentation using Altium Designer or comparable ECAD tools.
• Lead PCB bring-up, design debugging, design reviews, and release activities, including design for manufacturability, testability, reliability, serviceability, thermal performance, and cost.
• Evaluate component performance, derating, thermal behavior, signal integrity, power integrity, grounding, protection, EMI/EMC risk, lifecycle, and availability.
• Perform hands-on prototype assembly, wiring, soldering, board modification, and rework to support rapid development, troubleshooting, and design validation.

Motor Control & Embedded Firmware
• Develop, document, and maintain production-quality embedded firmware for motor controllers and other low-level hardware-control functions.
• Implement and validate motor-control behavior such as direction, speed profiles, acceleration and deceleration, current and torque limits, position and limit management, obstruction detection, thermal protection, fault handling, diagnostics, and recovery behavior.
• Develop and integrate microcontroller peripherals, device drivers, and hardware interfaces, including GPIO, PWM, ADC, UART, SPI, I²C, and RS-485, as applicable. Define and validate Ethernet and PoE electrical interfaces, power requirements, protection, isolation, connectivity, and integration with communications boards and motor-control systems.
• Partner with Software Engineering to define and validate electrical and I/O interfaces for PoE, wired, and wireless communications boards and the broader Screen Innovations and Shade Innovations controls ecosystem.
• Support firmware bring-up, regression testing, version control, release documentation, and production programming and test requirements.

Power, Battery & Communications Hardware Integration
• Design and integrate low-voltage power architectures, power supplies, DC/DC and AC/DC conversion, protection circuits, power distribution, and PoE-powered subsystems.
• Select, integrate, and validate lithium battery packs, battery-management systems, charging solutions, protection features, and battery-powered product architectures.
• Define voltage levels, current requirements, power sequencing, signal interfaces, connectors, harnesses, and interface-control requirements between motors, controllers, communications boards, power systems, and peripheral devices.
• Evaluate and integrate commercially available motors and motor-control components, including small tubular motor systems, while defining requirements for customized solutions when needed.

Required Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline.
• 7+ years of hands-on electrical or electronic product-development experience, including ownership of designs from concept through validation, production readiness, and release. Candidates with fewer than 7 years may be considered if they hold a master's degree in Electrical Engineering and bring substantive hands-on product-design and development experience.
• Strong familiarity with the development, specification, integration, and validation of small tubular motor systems, including motor-drive electronics, controls, performance characteristics, thermal behavior, and supplier development.
• Strong fundamentals in analog, digital, mixed-signal, microcontroller-based, and low-voltage power-system design.
• Demonstrated experience designing, reviewing, bringing up, and troubleshooting PCB/PCA assemblies and related electrical systems.
• Strong embedded firmware development experience for real-time control, motor-control, power-electronics, or other hardware-centric applications.
• Working knowledge of common embedded hardware interfaces, including GPIO, PWM, ADC, UART, SPI, I²C, and RS-485, along with experience integrating Ethernet and PoE-powered devices or subsystems.
• Hands-on proficiency with laboratory test and diagnostic equipment and a disciplined approach to design verification, troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, and risk reduction.
• Hands-on soldering and electronic rework experience or a recognized soldering/rework certification.
• Experience collaborating with software, mechanical, manufacturing, quality, procurement, suppliers, and contract manufacturing or engineering partners.
• Experience working within an engineering organization with established NPD and NPI processes and a demonstrated history of successfully transitioning new products into production.
• Ability to create clear electrical requirements, specifications, interface documentation, test plans, design records, and production-release documentation.

Preferred Qualifications
• Master's degree in Electrical Engineering strongly preferred.
• Experience with motor controllers, motor drives, motion-control systems, or electromechanical products using brushed DC, BLDC, stepper, tubular, or other low-voltage motors.
• Experience with lithium battery integration, battery-management systems, charging circuits, power supplies, DC/DC and AC/DC conversion, or PoE-powered products.
• Advanced proficiency with Altium Designer and experience with one or more modeling or electrical-design tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, LTspice, Zuken CR-8000, or E3.series.
• Experience with bare-metal or RTOS-based embedded systems and common microcontroller platforms such as ARM Cortex-M, STM32, TI C2000, or comparable devices.
• Experience with automated test fixtures, hardware-in-the-loop testing, Python-based test tooling, or production diagnostics.
• Experience supporting EMC/ESD, UL, CE, FCC, IEC, or other product safety and compliance activities.
• Current or prior soldering/rework certification, such as IPC J-STD-001, IPC-7711/7721, or a comparable credential.
• Experience in smart-home products, building automation, industrial automation, robotics, motorized window coverings, consumer electronics, or similar electromechanical product environments.
• Experience supporting technical IP documentation, invention disclosures, or proprietary product-development programs.
