Overview / Detailed Job Summary
The Senior Principal / Technical Director – Power Conversion System Architecture will be the senior technical leader responsible for defining and driving advanced AC-DC and DC-DC power-conversion architectures for Data Center and Industrial markets.
The role will bridge customer system requirements, power-conversion architecture and semiconductor product definition, ensuring that the Power BU develops competitive and differentiated solutions addressing future market requirements.
This position requires a combination of deep power-electronics expertise, hands-on system development experience, semiconductor understanding and senior-level customer engagement.
The individual will operate as a senior technical authority and will influence product and technology direction while mentoring System Architects.
Key Responsibilities
Role and Responsibilities:
System Architecture
Lead architecture definition for advanced AC-DC and DC-DC converters, including isolated and non-isolated power conversion.
Evaluate and select optimum converter topologies based on:
Efficiency
Power density
Switching frequency
Thermal performance
Reliability
EMI/EMC
System cost
Define system-level specifications and architecture trade-offs.
Drive architecture from concept through simulation, prototype development and validation.
Conduct technical feasibility and architecture reviews for new programs.
2. Semiconductor Product Definition
Translate system-level requirements into specifications for semiconductor products and technologies.
Work closely with Product Management, IC Design, Power Device, Packaging and Application teams to define requirements for:
Power semiconductor devices
Power Management ICs
Controllers
Integrated Power Stages
Power Modules
Protection solutions
Advanced packaging and integration technologies
Ensure that new product definitions are based on clear customer requirements, system benefits and competitive differentiation.
3. Data Center & Industrial Power Expertise
Provide technical leadership for power-conversion requirements associated with:
Data Center and computing infrastructure
Server power
High-density power supplies
The candidate should understand emerging trends in high-efficiency, high-frequency and high-power-density power conversion.
4. Technology Leadership & Innovation
Track technology trends across power conversion and power semiconductors.
Identify future system challenges and translate them into technology opportunities.
Evaluate new converter architectures, semiconductor technologies, control techniques, magnetics and packaging concepts.
Generate differentiated system concepts and contribute to patents and technical IP.
Support make/partner/license technology assessments where required.
Develop relationships with relevant universities, research institutes and technology partners.
5. Modeling & Hardware Validation
Lead system-level modelling and simulation.
Guide converter loss, efficiency, thermal and switching analysis.
Drive proof-of-concept and reference hardware development.
Correlate simulation results with laboratory measurements.
Guide optimization of semiconductor devices, control, magnetics, layout, parasitic and thermal design.
Establish technical methodologies and design guidelines for power-conversion development.
6. Customer Technical Interface
Act as a senior technical interface with strategic customers.
Engage with customer System Architects, Fellows, Distinguished Engineers and senior R&D teams.
Understand future system requirements and identify corresponding semiconductor opportunities.
Lead customer architecture workshops and technical deep-dives.
Support strategic customer engagements and design-in activities.
7. Technical Leadership & Mentoring
Serve as a technical authority for power-conversion architecture within the Power BU.
Mentor System Architects and senior engineers.
Lead critical technical and architecture reviews.
Develop technical competency across the organization.
Support recruitment and technical assessment of senior engineering talent.
Coach and develop future technical leaders.
Required Experience and Qualifications
15+ years of industry experience in Power Electronics / Power Conversion.
M.Tech / MS / PhD in Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics or related field.
Technical and Soft Skills
Strong expertise in AC-DC and DC-DC converter architecture.
Strong knowledge of both isolated and non-isolated converter topologies.
Hands-on experience designing and validating power-conversion hardware.
Strong understanding of power semiconductor devices and switching behavior.
Ability to translate system requirements into semiconductor product requirements.
Strong knowledge of several of the following:
PFC
Resonant converters
Multiphase converters
High-frequency power conversion
Analog/digital control
Magnetics
Thermal design
EMI/EMC
PCB/package parasitics
Experience with GaN, SiC and/or advanced Silicon power technologies.
Experience with PLECS, SPICE, MATLAB/Simulink or similar simulation tools.
