Senior R&D Electronics Engineer $150k-185k San Diego, CA

Summary
We are a small, established technology company developing sophisticated thermal measurement systems used in PCB manufacturing and other industries that rely on precise thermal profiles. As the Sr. R&D Electrical Engineer, you will play a crucial role in leading and contributing to engineering projects related to our proprietary designs. This is a broad, hands-on R&D role spanning the electronics stack from system architecture through PCB design, embedded hardware, prototyping, testing, and troubleshooting. You will apply principles of electrical theory to design, maintain, implement, and improve thermal electrical instruments and equipment. Your responsibilities will include adherence to design and safety standards, collaborating with cross-functional teams to deliver successful projects. This is an opportunity to become deeply involved in the architecture and evolution of entire product lines while working alongside a highly experienced Principal Electronics Engineer. We need someone who is naturally collaborative, intellectually curious, and self-directed. You'll be working in a small engineering environment where people solve problems together, rather than operating in isolated functional silos.

Responsibilities
Apply principles of electrical theory to design electrical systems, instruments and equipment.
Architect and develop electronic systems from concept through production.
Electrical hardware design of circuitry with both schematic and PCB layout implementation.
Design schematics, PCBAs, analog and digital circuitry, I/O, A/D and D/A interfaces, and embedded electronic systems.
Perform and/or direct PCB layout and participate in component selection, design reviews, prototyping, and hardware validation.
Develop solutions to complex real-world measurement and instrumentation challenges.
Troubleshoot hardware at the board and system level using test equipment and structured diagnostic techniques.
Collaborate with cross functional teams to develop engineering solutions: Work closely with firmware/software and other engineering disciplines to ensure hardware and embedded systems operate as an integrated product.
Ensure compliance with industry standards, codes and regulations
Conduct feasibility studies and make recommendations for improvements
Work side-by-side with the Principal Engineer, absorbing decades of practical engineering experience and progressively taking ownership of increasingly complex systems and projects.
Inspect completed projects to ensure they conform to design specifications and safety standards
Conduct quality control checks and implement corrective actions as needed.
Review project documentation, including drawings, specifications, and reports to ensure accuracy and compliance.

Requirements
Minimum experience in field of 10-15 years
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineer or related discipline
Schematic capture and PCBa design experience
A/D and D/A conversion experience
System Architecture - Hardware prototyping, testing, debugging, and design verification
Taking electronics from an engineering concept through a functioning product
Integration testing
Embedded systems experience (microcontrollers)
Analog-to-Digital Conversions
Altium schematic and PCB software (of other PCBa layout software)
FPGA logic design with Verilog is a plus
Experience with thermal measurement, temperature profiling, instrumentation, or PCB manufacturing would be advantageous, but we are more interested in exceptional electronics fundamentals than direct industry experience.
Proven ability to take ownership rather than waiting to be told what to do.
History of showing comfortability moving between system architecture, detailed circuit design, testing, troubleshooting, and problem solving.
Enjoy understanding why a system works—not simply completing an assigned design.
Communicate ideas clearly and work comfortably with engineers and non-engineers alike.
Ask questions, challenge assumptions constructively, and contribute ideas.
Be willing to learn from someone with significantly more experience while bringing their own knowledge and perspective to the team.
Desire increasing responsibility and technical ownership over time.
