Company Description: Black Mesa Advanced Fission develops highly portable, logistics-free electrical generators using tactical and expeditionary mobile microreactor tec
hnology.
The company focuses on delivering reliable, compact power solutions designed for demanding field environments and critical missions. Its work centers on enabling clean, resilient energy where traditional infrastructure is limited or unavailable, and where fuel logistics are contested, difficult, or costly.
Black Mesa Advanced Fission combines advanced nuclear engineering, safety-focused design, and practical deployment considerations to move next-generation fission power from concept to real-world use.
Team members collaborate across disciplines to help shape the future of mobile nuclear energy systems.
Role Description: This full-time, on-site R&D Electrical Engineer (Mid-career) role is based in Evanston, WY.
The engineer will design, analyze, and validate electrical systems and subsystems for mobile microreactor power generation, including power conversion, distribution, control, and protection circuitry.
Day-to-day responsibilities include developing concepts, building prototypes, creating schematics, running simulations, and supporting integration of electrical hardware with mechanical and nuclear systems. The role involves defining and executing test plans, collecting and interpreting data, troubleshooting issues, and iterating designs to meet performance, safety, and reliability requirements.
The engineer will collaborate closely with cross-functional R&D teams, participate in design reviews, contribute to documentation, and support compliance with applicable standards and regulatory expectations.
Qualifications:
Strong analytical skills, including circuit analysis, modeling, and data interpretation for complex electrical systems.
Hands-on experience in Research and Development (R&D) and research activities related to power electronics, controls, or advanced energy systems.
Proficiency in testing, including test plan development, instrumentation setup, data acquisition, and verification/validation of prototypes.
Background in product development, including concept generation, schematic capture, PCB or hardware design, and design-for-reliability considerations.
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related field; advanced degree preferred or equivalent practical experience.
Familiarity with power conversion (DC/DC, DC/AC, AC/DC), protection schemes, and electrical safety standards.
Experience with simulation and design tools (e.g., SPICE, MATLAB/Simulink, CAD/EDA tools) and documentation tools.
Ability to work on-site in a lab, shop, and prototyping environment, collaborating across disciplines and managing multiple tasks independently.
Experience in nuclear, aerospace, defense, or other high-reliability, safety-critical systems is a plus.
Strong communication skills and a commitment to rigorous engineering practices and continuous learning.
