Job Title: Packaging Project Engineer (Level II)
Location: Richmond, VA
Employment Type: Full-Time, Direct Hire
Compensation: Up to $105,000 annually (based on experience)
Position Overview
We’re seeking a Packaging Project Engineer to support and lead a range of engineering initiatives within a regulated manufacturing setting. This role is responsible for overseeing packaging-related projects from concept through execution, including equipment design, implementation, and performance optimization.
The ideal candidate is comfortable managing projects independently while also contributing to larger, cross-functional efforts that support production efficiency, compliance, and overall operational success.
Key Responsibilities
Engineering & Execution
Provide technical support for packaging equipment initiatives across new and existing product lines
Develop packaging line layouts and support integration of systems and equipment
Oversee installation, startup, and validation activities for new equipment
Create and execute testing protocols to ensure proper equipment performance
Participate in vendor evaluations, including FAT and SAT processes
Project Coordination
Manage multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring timelines, scope, and budgets are met
Develop cost estimates and monitor project spending
Contribute to capital planning and long-term project strategies
Provide regular updates and reports to internal stakeholders
Review and approve contractor proposals, RFIs, and change documentation
Collaboration
Partner with internal teams including Operations, Quality, Regulatory, and Procurement to resolve issues and drive project success
Coordinate with vendors and cross-functional teams to ensure alignment and efficiency
Maintain adherence to internal standards and regulatory expectations
Compliance & Process Improvement
Ensure all engineering activities meet cGMP and regulatory requirements
Support change control and validation processes related to equipment and systems
Identify and implement improvements to enhance efficiency and standardization
Promote a culture of compliance and continuous improvement
Documentation & Training
Develop and maintain technical documentation such as SOPs, reports, and job aids
Keep accurate records of project activities and outcomes
Train operations staff on new equipment and updated processes
Act as a technical resource for team members
Qualifications
Education & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline
At least 5 years of experience in a manufacturing environment (pharma, personal care, or similar preferred)
Hands-on experience with equipment design, installation, and validation in a regulated setting
Core Skills
Strong organizational and project management capabilities
Ability to manage multiple priorities with minimal supervision
Solid analytical and troubleshooting skills
Effective communication and technical documentation abilities
Familiarity with cGMP and regulatory standards
Ability to interpret P&IDs, process flows, and engineering drawings
Experience with CAD or similar tools is a plus
Proven ability to lead and collaborate with cross-functional teams
