Position Overview
We are seeking a skilled and motivated Product Designer/ Mechanical Design Engineer to join our engineering team. In this role, you will design and develop specialized aftermarket bracketry for a diverse range of automotive/engine applications, including bus, ambulance, RV, commercial refrigeration, and AC systems, develop detailed engineering drawings following specifications/design standards, and develop installation instructions and supplemental documentation necessary for bracket installation.
This position is intended for a capable Designer with engineering experience, but we welcome applications for talented new graduates who possess strong fundamental engineering skills and are looking for foundational experience in the industry. Please note that we are currently unable to sponsor or support EIT (Engineer-in-Training) / PE licensure tracks; the focus of this role is practical design, development and validation.
Key Responsibilities
Product Design: Design, model, and detail automotive aftermarket brackets and mounting kits for specialized vehicle applications.
Hands-On Validation: Work directly on and around vehicles as part of the physical design fitment and prototyping validation process (periodic travel may be necessary in this position).
CAD Modeling: Utilize CAD software (primarily SolidWorks) to create 3D models, complex assemblies, and production drawings.
Engineering Evaluation: Apply engineering principles to ensure design integrity regarding stress, frequency/vibration, load distribution, velocity, power consumption, factor/margin of safety, and material properties. Use simulation tools and engineering knowledge to ensure proper safety and environmental factors are considered.
Drafting Standards: Interpret, recreate, and generate precise engineering drawings adhering strictly to both US and European drafting standards.
OEM & Customer Collaboration: Interface with OEMs and customers to gather requirements, navigate technical specifications, and communicate design project statuses clearly.
2.Required Qualifications and Skills
CAD Competency: Prior hands-on competency using 3D CAD software is a must. Specific training for SolidWorks may be provided if your primary experience is with another platform pending overall competency and understanding can be identified.
Vehicle Experience/Interest: A strong interest or background working directly with vehicles, automotive packaging, engine bays, or hands-on mechanical work is highly requested.
Software Tools: Competency in the Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) is essential for everyday documentation and communication. SolidWorks proficiency or another CAD software is required. Image and document manipulation software experience (Photoshop, Adobe, Illustrator) are also ideal.
Technical Knowledge: A solid grasp of material properties, proper material selection, and structural environments. Competency and ability to apply engineering design principles (DFA, DFM, Stress, Frequency, Fatigue) in design work and communications. A firm understanding of engineering principles (Material Sciences, Mechanics, Thermodynamics, and Systems Integration).
Manufacturing Knowledge: Competency in manufacturing methods (DFA DFM), and proper material selections for design and manufacturing requirements. Understanding proper tool/method selection, material properties, and the financial impact of manufacturing and joining methods.
Communication: Clear verbal and written communication skills to collaborate effectively with both internal designers and external clients/engineering teams/vendors (email, bulletin, phone, in-person).
3.Experience and Education
Experience: Open to varying levels of experience, including recent engineering graduates who can demonstrate a strong technical foundation and eagerness to learn.
Education: BS in Mechanical Engineering, Degree in similar discipline where understanding falls under the same scope
Application Note: Interview Process
As a critical part of our evaluation and to ensure alignment with our design workflow, qualified candidates will be required to complete a 1-hour technical review/practical assessment during the interview process. This will evaluate foundational CAD operation and design reasoning, drafting comprehension, and core engineering problem-solving.
