ERL Phase Power Technologies Ltd. is seeking a Lead Hardware Design Engineer for its subsidiary, Phase Power Protection Pvt. Ltd., Bangalore. We are looking for an experienced Lead Hardware Design Engineer with strong expertise in analog electronics, power electronics, and embedded hardware to design and develop Digital/Numerical Protection Relays (Intelligent Electronic Devices – IEDs) for electrical substations. The successful candidate will contribute to hardware architecture, design, and product development while working closely with Firmware, Validation, Mechanical, Manufacturing, Product Management, and other cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality, reliable products. The role requires hands-on experience in end-to-end hardware product development, from concept and design through validation, certification, manufacturing, and production support. Responsibilities:
Design and develop analog, power, digital, and mixed-signal hardware for Numerical Protection Relays/IEDs from concept through production release.
Design precision analog front-end circuits for CT/PT current and voltage measurement, including signal conditioning, amplification, filtering, protection, and ADC interfaces.
Design isolated AC/DC and DC/DC power supplies, SMPS, and protection circuits, considering efficiency, thermal performance, isolation, and reliability.
Perform schematic design, component selection, circuit simulation, worst-case analysis, and PCB layout/Gerber review.
Ensure hardware compliance with IEC 60255, IEC 61000, CE, EMC/EMI, safety, environmental, and other applicable product standards.
Perform hardware bring-up, debugging, design verification, root-cause analysis, type testing, and field-failure analysis using standard laboratory equipment.
Prepare and maintain hardware design documents, design calculations, verification reports, test specifications, and engineering change documentation.
Develop reliable, manufacturable, and cost-effective hardware, considering component derating, lifecycle/obsolescence, and long-term product support.
Collaborate with firmware, validation, mechanical, testing, manufacturing, sourcing teams throughout the product development lifecycle.
Evaluate new technologies, components, and design practices to continuously improve product performance, reliability, quality, and maintainability.
Skills and Qualifications:
B.E./B.Tech or M.E./M.Tech in Electronics, Electrical, Instrumentation, or related discipline, with 8–10 years of hands-on experience in hardware design and product development.
Strong expertise in Analog & Power Electronics, including CT/PT interfaces, signal conditioning, ADC circuits, analog filtering, protection circuits, and isolated/non-isolated power supplies.
Hands-on experience in analog measurement circuit design, component selection, tolerance/error analysis, grounding, isolation, and noise reduction.
Proficiency in Cadence OrCAD Capture & Allegro Viewer or similar tools for schematic design and PCB layout review.
Experience with PSpice or similar simulation tools, including worst-case analysis, component derating, and design calculations using Mathcad or equivalent tools.
Strong hands-on skills in hardware bring-up, testing, validation, debugging, and root-cause analysis using oscilloscopes, DMMs, power supplies, signal generators, and other laboratory equipment.
Good knowledge of EMC/EMI, grounding, isolation, surge/EFT/ESD protection, thermal design, and hardware reliability.
Good understanding of IEC 60255, IEC 61000, and other applicable standards for Protection Relays/IEDs.
Experience in Numerical Protection Relays, Protection & Control IEDs, Substation/Grid Automation, Power Monitoring, or similar Electrical Power System products.
Strong analytical, troubleshooting, technical documentation, design review, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
