Role title - Lab Instructor - Electronics (EC) Makerspace
Location - Dayananda Sagar University, Bengaluru
Employment - Full-time
Education - Diploma in Electronics, ECE, EEE, Instrumentation, Embedded Systems, Mechatronics or a closely related discipline.
Experience - Minimum 3 years of relevant hands-on experience
Role purpose
Operate and support the Electronics (EC) Makerspace on a daily basis so that learners can safely build, test and demonstrate working solutions. The instructor will prepare sessions, demonstrate tools, provide first-line troubleshooting, maintain assets and records, and help project teams convert ideas into reliable prototypes.
Key responsibilities
Prepare equipment, software images, datasets, consumables and safety checks before every scheduled laboratory session.
Demonstrate tools and workflows; assist students, faculty, research scholars and approved startup/project teams during hands-on work.
Troubleshoot first-level hardware, software, network and integration issues; document incidents and escalate unresolved failures with evidence.
Maintain equipment logs, calibration/maintenance records, checkout registers, software-licence records, consumable stock and asset labels.
Follow approved SOPs, access controls, EHS rules and emergency procedures; stop unsafe or unauthorized work immediately.
Create quick-start guides, experiment sheets, demo setups and reusable reference projects aligned to courses, hackathons and industry challenges.
Capture utilization, learner participation, session completion, equipment downtime and prototype progress in the CoE tracker.
Support open-house events, demonstrations, bootcamps and visits while protecting equipment, data, IP and confidential project material.
Required hands-on equipment and infrastructure
The candidate must be able to set up, operate, demonstrate and perform first-level troubleshooting on the core equipment below.
ESD workstations, ESD mats/wrist straps, magnifying lamps and desk microscopes
Soldering stations, hot-air rework stations, fume extractors and PCB holders/clamps
Digital and handheld oscilloscopes, digital multimeters, function generators, spectrum analyser, LCR meters and logic analysers
NI ELVIS engineering workstations, DC power supplies and PCB prototyping kits/CNC
Arduino Uno/Nano, Raspberry Pi 5/Pico, ESP32, STM32 development and FPGA boards
NVIDIA Jetson and Coral-class edge-AI devices; AI cameras, IoT and sensor kits
Bluetooth/Wi-Fi, GSM/GPS modules, JTAG/ST-Link debuggers, breadboards, wiring and mechanical prototyping kits
Required hands-on software and platforms
PCB CAD and circuit-simulation tools appropriate to the installed lab environment
Arduino IDE, PlatformIO, STM32Cube tools and FPGA vendor toolchains
Embedded C/C++, Python, serial/logic/network analysis and firmware-debugging tools
MATLAB/Simulink or equivalent modelling and signal-processing tools
Git-based source control and issue/change documentation
JetPack, CUDA, TensorRT, DeepStream, TAO Toolkit and Isaac ROS for edge-AI projects, where applicable
Core technical capability
Schematic reading, circuit assembly, soldering/rework, PCB bring-up and root-cause troubleshooting
Use of oscilloscopes, analysers, meters, power supplies and DAQ with correct measurement practice
Microcontroller/FPGA programming, sensors, communication buses, IoT connectivity and firmware debugging
ESD controls, electrical safety, component traceability, calibration and consumable inventory management
Ability to support projects such as smart cameras, energy-monitoring devices, PCB inspection, medical wearables, predictive-maintenance nodes, secure IoT gateways and product-ready embedded prototypes.
Experience profile
3+ years in a relevant laboratory, workshop, R&D, manufacturing, IT/engineering support, product-development or technical-training environment.
Evidence of personally operating the relevant tools, preparing experiments and troubleshooting real hardware/software issues.
Experience maintaining usage logs, asset/consumable records, SOPs or preventive-maintenance checklists.
Experience guiding students, trainees, technicians or junior engineers is strongly preferred.
Behavioural capabilities
Demonstrated bias for safe, hands-on execution and patient learner support
Clear written documentation and concise technical communication
Ownership, reliability and ability to work across academic and industry stakeholders
Comfort working in a multidisciplinary, build-test-learn environment
Ethical handling of data, equipment, access, IP and safety responsibilities
Success measures
On-time lab/session readiness and safe completion of scheduled practical work
First-line issue resolution and quality/timeliness of escalation evidence
Equipment, software, calibration, checkout and consumable records kept current
Student support quality, learner competency and successful completion of experiments/prototypes
Adherence to SOPs, safety, access, data/IP and housekeeping requirements
Reusable guides, demo setups and reference projects created for the CoE
