Aecon Utility Engineering (AUE) is Aecon Utilities’ in-house engineering division, delivering innovative design and project solutions across electrical, telecommunications, pipeline and utility infrastructure. AUE partners with clients and construction teams to deliver efficient, high-quality outcomes that support reliable, future-ready infrastructure.

Aecon Utilities Engineering is seeking a licensed Stations Engineer to support the planning, design, engineering, and execution of electrical stations and substation projects across North America. This role is responsible for delivering technical engineering solutions, preparing and reviewing design packages, supporting procurement and construction activities, conducting engineering analyses, and providing technical guidance to project teams throughout the project lifecycle.

The successful candidate will possess strong knowledge of utility station and substation design principles and be capable of independently reviewing, approving, and sealing engineering deliverables where jurisdictionally permitted.

This is a professional engineering position and requires an active professional engineering licence with stamping authority.

This position can be based out of either the Greater Toronto Area (Ontario), or Michigan (USA).

What You'll Do Here

Perform engineering and design activities for transmission and distribution substations, switching stations, collector stations, BESS stations, and related utility infrastructure.
Prepare, review, and approve engineering drawings, calculations, specifications, reports, and technical documentation.
Develop station layouts, general arrangements, grounding systems, conduit and cable routing, equipment layouts, and associated design packages.
Support protection and control, SCADA, communications, and station auxiliary systems design coordination.
Perform engineering studies including grounding, load flow, short circuit, protection coordination, insulation coordination, arc flash, cable ampacity, and related analyses.
Review vendor drawings, equipment submittals, and technical specifications to ensure compliance with project requirements.
Provide interpretation of engineering drawings, standards, specifications, and utility requirements to construction teams and subcontractors.
Investigate, analyze, and resolve engineering and field construction issues and design discrepancies.
Support procurement, installation, testing, commissioning, energization, and project closeout activities.
Coordinate with utilities, clients, contractors, suppliers, regulators, and multidisciplinary engineering teams.
Monitor engineering changes, technical risks, scope modifications, and contract extras.
Prepare and maintain as-built documentation and engineering records.
Support proposals, estimates, and pursuits for new work.
Stamp and seal engineering deliverables in accordance with applicable jurisdictional requirements.
Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers, designers, technologists, and project teams as required.
Perform other duties as assigned.


What You Bring To The Team

Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution.
Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation in Ontario, or eligibility to practice and seal engineering documents in Ontario; and/or Professional Engineer (PE) licence in Michigan with authority to sign and seal engineering deliverables.
3 to 7 years of progressive experience in utility engineering, substation engineering, station design, power systems, or related electrical infrastructure projects.
Experience supporting engineering projects from concept through commissioning.
Experience working with utilities, EPC, EPCM, industrial, renewable energy, or transmission and distribution projects.
Knowledge of station and substation physical design.
Familiarity with protection and control systems, SCADA, communications, and utility interconnection requirements.
Understanding of applicable electrical codes, utility standards, industry practices, and engineering governance requirements.
Working knowledge of grounding, power system studies, high-voltage equipment, switchgear, transformers, relay systems, and station auxiliary systems.
Experience reviewing engineering calculations and design packages.
Knowledge of engineering change management processes.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
Experience using power system analysis and engineering software such as ETAP, SKM, EasyPower, CYME, CDEGS, AutoCAD, MicroStation, Bluebeam, or equivalent tools.
Experience with renewable energy, BESS, utility interconnection, transmission, or collector station projects.
Experience supporting construction, commissioning, and energization activities.
Experience preparing sealed engineering packages for utility clients.
Strong technical and analytical capabilities.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced project environment.
Strong collaboration and stakeholder management skills.
High attention to detail and commitment to quality.
Demonstrated commitment to safety, integrity, and continuous improvement.
Ability to work in a hybrid office and field-based environment.
Willingness to travel to project sites, client offices, and utility facilities as required.
Ability to support project schedules, commissioning, and outage activities, including occasional extended work hours.
Ability to work safely in industrial and utility environments and comply with all applicable safety requirements.


Reason for Vacancy: New

The expected pay range for this role is $95,000 - $125,000 per year CDN.

Individual pay is determined based on several factors, including work location, education, experience, unique skills and job conditions. Other considerations may include certifications, specialized training, and the complexity or scope of the role.
