Job Description

The Cable and Harness Design Engineer designs and develops cable and harness solutions. This role combines hands-on harness design and build work with electrical engineering principles to create rugged, reliable interconnects that perform in challenging environments. You will work closely with a small, collaborative team of engineers and technicians, contribute new ideas, and help drive the next generation of defense technologies.

Responsibilities

Design and develop cable and harness assemblies that meet system and environmental requirements.
Build and prototype cable harnesses to validate designs and support system integration.
Apply principles of shielding, grounding, and bonding to ensure electromagnetic compatibility and system reliability.
Interpret and work from electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and related technical documentation to create accurate harness designs.
Select and integrate MIL-STD connectors and related components into cable and harness designs.
Create and update detailed harness drawings and documentation using AutoCAD.
Collaborate with engineers and technicians to refine designs based on feedback from testing, assembly, and field performance.
Support troubleshooting and resolution of issues related to cable harness performance, routing, and connectivity.
Contribute ideas to improve design practices, assembly methods, and documentation standards within the team.
Work closely with technicians performing hands-on assembly to ensure designs are manufacturable, robust, and clearly documented.

Essential Skills

Proven ability to design cable and harness assemblies for complex electro-mechanical or electronic systems.
Hands-on experience building or assembling cable harnesses.
Strong understanding of shielding, grounding, and bonding as they relate to cable harnessing.
Knowledge of IPC/WHMA-A-620 or similar cable and wire harness acceptance standards.
Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and wiring diagrams accurately.
Experience working with MIL-STD connectors and related interconnect hardware.
Proficiency with AutoCAD for creating and modifying harness and wiring drawings.
Background in harness design, cable harnessing, or electrical engineering.
Ability to collaborate effectively with engineers, technicians, and other team members.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

Experience in a technician role focused on cable harness build and design, with interest in or progression toward an electrical engineering-focused role.
Formal education or training in electrical engineering, electronics, or a closely related field.
Familiarity with design practices for ruggedized systems intended for harsh or demanding environments.
Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail in both design and documentation.
Interest in contributing to the development of next-generation defense technologies.

Work Environment

You will work in a small, close-knit group of approximately 18 people, including managers, technicians, and engineers, where collaboration, mentorship, and the exchange of new ideas are strongly encouraged. Day-to-day work involves using tools such as AutoCAD, working with MIL-STD connectors, and interacting directly with technicians who perform hands-on assembly of cable and harness components.
