About FinePoint
FinePoint Technology is a building intelligence engineering firm serving architects, owners, and contractors. We don’t install — we design, consult, and ensure building technology works as intended. No Parts. Just Smarts. From strategic planning through construction administration and ongoing support, we provide unbiased expertise on audiovisual, telecommunications, security, and building technology systems in corporate, healthcare, education, and government environments.
We’re looking for someone who’s been designing technology systems — whether AV, telecom, or security — and wants to bring that expertise to the consulting side of the table. If you’ve ever thought, “I wish the design consultant had actually understood how these systems work,” this is your chance to be that consultant.
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Technology Design Engineer to join our Design & Engineering department. This role focuses on creating comprehensive technology system designs for commercial environments — with emphasis on audiovisual systems, low-voltage infrastructure, and/or electronic safety & security (ESS) design. You’ll produce construction-ready documentation — drawings, specifications, and coordination sets — that architects, contractors, and owners depend on to build technology into their facilities.
This is a consulting and design role. You’ll be the technology engineer of record across diverse project types, applying your systems knowledge to create designs that are coordinated, code-compliant, and constructable.
Key Responsibilities
Design & Engineering
Create comprehensive technology system designs including AV, structured cabling, telecommunications, and/or security system packages through all AEC project phases (SD, DD, CD, CA)
Prepare detailed technical drawings using AutoCAD and Revit, with Bluebeam for markup, review, and coordination
Develop system specifications, equipment schedules, cable schedules, riser diagrams, and installation details
Ensure designs comply with applicable industry standards (TIA/EIA, BICSI, NFPA, NEC) and local building codes
Develop project budgets and provide cost estimation support for technology systems
Project Coordination
Review architectural, mechanical, and electrical plans to coordinate technology system routing, space requirements, and infrastructure needs
Perform site surveys to assess existing conditions and develop technology requirements with clients
Coordinate with architects, engineers, contractors, and vendors throughout the project lifecycle
Participate in design team meetings, construction administration, and project closeout activities
Technical Consulting
Serve as a subject matter expert in one or more technology disciplines: audiovisual, telecommunications/structured cabling, or electronic safety & security
Research and evaluate emerging technologies to inform client recommendations and design standards
Provide technology planning input during programming and schematic design phases
Support quality assurance and quality control procedures for all technology design deliverables
Maintain current knowledge of industry standards, codes, and product developments
Client & Team Collaboration
Work collaboratively within multidisciplinary project teams alongside designers, engineers, and project managers
Communicate effectively with clients, design team members, vendors, and contractors regarding design intent and technical requirements
Contribute to internal knowledge sharing, design standards development, and template improvement
Required Qualifications
Education & Experience
3–7 years of experience in technology system design — at a consulting firm, systems integrator, manufacturer, or engineering firm
Demonstrated experience producing construction-level documentation for AV, telecom/structured cabling, or security systems in commercial environments
Associate or bachelor’s degree in Engineering Technology, Electronics, IT, or a related field preferred — equivalent experience with a strong portfolio will be considered
Technical Skills
Proficiency in AutoCAD for technology design and documentation (required)
Working proficiency in Revit/BIM for 3D coordination and modeling (required)
Proficiency in Bluebeam Revu for document review, markup, and coordination (required)
Strong knowledge in at least one core discipline: audiovisual system design (signal flow, audio/video distribution, control systems, DSP); OR telecommunications infrastructure (pathway design, network topology, MDF/IDF layouts, structured cabling); OR electronic safety & security (access control, video surveillance, intrusion detection)
Understanding of IP networking fundamentals and how building technology systems operate on enterprise networks
Familiarity with building codes, AEC construction processes, and construction document standards
Proficiency in Microsoft 365 suite
Professional Skills
Strong written and verbal communication — you will write specifications and present to design teams and clients
Organizational skills to manage multiple concurrent projects with competing deadlines
Self-motivated with a professional, consultative approach to client interactions
Comfort working in the AEC ecosystem: design meetings, site walks, construction environments
Collaborative mindset and willingness to contribute across disciplines as project needs require
Industry Knowledge
Understanding of AEC (Architecture, Engineering, Construction) project delivery methods
Experience coordinating with system integrators, contractors, and technology vendors
Knowledge of commercial construction processes and documentation requirements
Certifications & Licenses
Required: Valid driver’s license
Preferred: CTS-D (Certified Technology Specialist – Design), RCDD (Registered Communications Distribution Designer), or PSP/CPP (ASIS security certifications)
Required: Willingness to obtain or maintain a relevant industry certification (CTS-D or RCDD) within 18 months of hire — FinePoint will support your certification path
Job Requirements
Travel up to 20% (+/-) for site surveys, client meetings, and project coordination, and conferences
Flexibility to work occasional non-traditional hours to meet project deadlines
Ability to work in active construction environments and perform field verification
Performance Metrics
Success in this role will be measured by:
Quality and accuracy of technology system design deliverables
Project delivery timeliness and adherence to budget parameters
Client satisfaction with technical solutions and communication
Professional development progress and certification achievements
Effective collaboration with project teams and Design & Engineering leadership
Compensation & Benefits
Competitive salary
Comprehensive benefits package (health, dental, vision)
Professional development support including certification exam fees and continuing education
401(k) with company matching
Flexible work arrangements and technology resources
Clear advancement opportunities within growing Design & Engineering department
Reporting Structure
Collaboration with: Project Managers, CAD/BIM Specialists, and cross-functional project teams
Career Path: Advancement to Senior Technology Design Engineer role with potential Design Manager track as company grows
Why FinePoint
FinePoint is a growing building intelligence firm where your expertise directly shapes how technology gets designed into buildings. You won’t be buried in a large organization — you’ll have direct client interaction, real influence on design standards, and the opportunity to grow with a firm that’s investing in its Design & Engineering practice. If you’ve been designing systems and want to bring that knowledge to consulting-side work with more variety, more ownership, and a clear career path, we’d like to talk.
