The Substation Practice is seeking a Project Engineer.
This role supports the delivery of substation design work for utility-scale wind, solar, and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects across the United States. On a day-to-day basis, this person will contribute to design efforts, produce technical deliverables, and support project teams in executing active substation work.
As part of a collaborative team, you will work closely with senior engineers to develop your technical depth, contribute to project delivery, and build experience across a range of substation projects and clients.
This role is hybrid- or remote-friendly, with a preference for an individual who is based near one of our offices located in Portland, OR, Corvallis, OR, Bend, OR, Bellingham, WA, Seattle, WA, Tacoma, WA, Spokane, WA, Boise, ID, Denver, CO, or Remote.
What You’ll Do
Key Responsibilities:
Create and oversee substation design deliverables from preliminary through IFC plan sets; deliverables may include but not limited to: one-line diagrams, schematics, wiring, general arrangements, conduit, grounding, equipment connection details, design criteria, equipment specifications, and construction specifications
Perform engineering calculations such as bus sizing, AC/DC station service sizing, cable sizing, grounding, and equipment selection
Coordinate with project manager and multidisciplinary project teams to support project execution
Assist with preparation of technical studies (short circuit, grounding, arc flash, etc.)
Perform QA/QC reviews of junior engineers’ work and incorporate feedback from senior engineers and SMEs
Provide support during construction phases, including RFI responses and submittal review
Provide technical guidance and mentorship to entry-level engineers as they develop substation design skills and project delivery experience
What You Bring
Required Qualifications:
Bachelors degree in electrical or mechanical engineering
4-8 years' experience specifically in substation protection & control, or physical design experience
Professional Engineer (PE) license
Experience coordinating with multidisciplinary teams
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in utility-scale renewable energy projects (wind, solar, BESS)
Consulting experience preferred
Familiarity with substation design tools (e.g., EasyPower, ETAP)
