Job Summary
An established engineering consultancy is seeking a Substation Physical Engineer to join its team in College Station, Texas. This role involves delivering high-quality substation design solutions while working closely with utility and developer clients.
Key Responsibilities
Serve as a technical point of contact for clients, providing expertise on substation physical design methodologies and best practices
Lead the development of design deliverables for utility upgrades, including both greenfield and brownfield AIS substations
Provide independent engineering oversight and act as a trusted advisor representing client interests
Interpret client standards and protection philosophies, offering informed feedback and ensuring alignment in design execution
Independently produce complete substation design packages within project timelines and budgets
Mentor and support junior engineers and designers within the team
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support business development, including proposals and tender submissions
Deliver high-quality project execution in line with contractual requirements
Develop detailed engineering drawings, including:
General arrangement plans and sections
Conduit and trench layouts
Grounding plans
Bills of materials and conduit schedules
Participate in site visits and provide engineering support during construction phases as required
Qualifications & Experience
Proven experience in substation physical design for transmission and distribution projects
Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in the United States, with the ability to obtain licensure in Texas
Minimum of 9 years’ experience in substation physical design within a utility or consulting environment
Strong knowledge of:
Grounding system design
Lighting and lightning protection systems
Experience developing and reviewing vendor specifications (e.g., control buildings, switchgear)
Demonstrated capability in QA/QC of engineering calculations, drawings, and specifications
Proficiency with CADD software (e.g., Autodesk or Bentley platforms)
Experience in project scoping, task order preparation, and design reviews
Ability to verify compliance with client and regulatory standards
Willingness to conduct field visits and site walkdowns
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Power Engineering, or a related discipline
A Master’s degree may be considered as equivalent to one year of professional experience
Additional Requirements
Willingness to relocate to College Station, TX or work in a hybrid or remote capacity
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Effective interpersonal and presentation abilities
