Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Substation Engineer – Physical Design to join a growing Power Delivery team. This position will be responsible for the engineering and physical design of electrical substations across utility and power delivery projects.
The ideal candidate will have 6+ years of substation engineering experience, strong knowledge of physical design standards and practices, and the ability to take ownership of projects from initial design through construction.
A Professional Engineer (PE) license is preferred, but strong substation physical design experience will be considered.
Key Responsibilities
Develop and oversee physical substation designs for utility and power delivery projects, including new substations, expansions, upgrades, and modifications.
Prepare and review substation physical design drawings, including:
General arrangements and site plans
Equipment layouts
Section and elevation drawings
Steel and structure layouts
Bus layouts
Conduit and cable routing
Grounding layouts
Lighting and shielding systems
Control building layouts
Bill of materials and equipment specifications
Perform engineering calculations and develop design criteria in accordance with applicable utility standards and industry practices.
Coordinate physical design requirements with Protection & Controls, Civil/Structural, Transmission, Distribution, and other engineering disciplines.
Review engineering drawings, specifications, calculations, and construction packages for technical accuracy and compliance.
Support project teams throughout the design, construction, and commissioning phases.
Participate in client meetings and provide technical guidance to clients, project managers, and junior engineers.
Provide technical mentorship and guidance to less-experienced engineers and designers.
Assist with project scope development, schedules, estimates, and resource planning.
Perform site visits and field investigations as needed.
Ensure designs comply with applicable NESC, IEEE, ANSI, OSHA, utility standards, and project-specific requirements.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
6+ years of professional engineering experience within the electric utility, power delivery, or substation industry.
Demonstrated experience with substation physical design and engineering.
Experience designing substations typically ranging from 69kV through 345kV+.
Strong understanding of substation equipment, bus configurations, clearances, grounding, shielding, structures, and electrical safety requirements.
Experience developing and reviewing engineering drawings and construction packages.
Ability to coordinate effectively across multiple engineering disciplines.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications
Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.
Experience with 500kV substations or other high-voltage transmission projects.
Experience working directly with electric utilities, EPC firms, or engineering consulting firms.
Proficiency with AutoCAD and/or MicroStation.
Experience with ETAP, AutoCAD Electrical, PLS-CADD, CYMCAP, or other engineering/design software is a plus.
Experience with utility-specific substation design standards and specifications.
Previous experience leading projects or mentoring junior engineers.
Experience supporting substation construction, commissioning, or field engineering activities.
What You'll Bring
The ideal candidate is a technically strong substation engineer who can independently lead physical design efforts while collaborating with engineers, designers, project managers, and clients.
You should be comfortable working on complex high-voltage substation projects and have a strong understanding of how engineering decisions translate into constructible, safe, and reliable facilities.
This is an excellent opportunity for a Senior Substation Engineer looking to take on greater technical responsibility and work on challenging Power Delivery projects.
