Description
We are seeking a skilled and motivated Substation Engineer (Physical Design) to join a growing power and energy team. This role offers the opportunity to work on a diverse portfolio of high-voltage substation projects, supporting the transition to a more sustainable and resilient energy network.
As part of a multidisciplinary engineering consultancy, you will play a key role in delivering physical design solutions for transmission and distribution substations, collaborating with clients, contractors, and internal teams.
Key Responsibilities
Deliver physical design layouts for HV substations (AIS and GIS)
Produce and review:
General arrangements
Equipment layouts
Cable routing and trench layouts
Earthing layouts and designs
Coordinate with electrical, civil, and protection engineers
Ensure designs comply with relevant UK and international standards (e.g., IEC, BS, National Grid specifications)
Support site visits, surveys, and design validation activities
Contribute to technical reports, specifications, and tender documentation
Provide technical guidance to junior engineers and designers
Requirements
Degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline
Proven experience in substation physical design (typically 3+ years)
Strong knowledge of HV equipment and layouts (up to 400kV preferred)
Familiarity with design tools such as AutoCAD, MicroStation, or similar
Understanding of earthing design principles
Experience working within an engineering consultancy or EPC environment
Strong communication and teamwork skills
Desirable Skills
Experience with BIM or 3D modelling tools
Working towards or holding Chartered Engineer (CEng) status
