Primary Function
The Substation Engineer performs engineering work with a focus on substation engineering design, including both physical and protection & control practices. This role requires knowledge of substation systems from 34.5 kV to 500 kV with familiarity of basic principles related to the engineering design of high-voltage substations. Successful candidates may be placed in the Project Engineer, Senior Project Engineer, or Lead Engineer title based on their experience. The position will be based in our The Woodlands, Texas office located at 1575 Sawdust Rd, Suite 300, The Woodlands, TX 77380 and will report to Dashiell’s Engineering Manager.
Duties & Responsibilities
Employee may be called upon to perform any or all of the following functions:
Work within a project team to create all design documents and drawings for a project, including creating wiring diagrams from schematics, generating bills of materials, and applying field mark-ups of project as-built drawings with minimal supervision.
Perform engineering support tasks such as relay burden, lighting, load flow, and short circuit calculations with minimal supervision.
Apply engineering application software to complete engineering tasks such as ground grid design, relay coordination, transformer sizing, and load flow and short circuit studies with minimal supervision.
Review project schedules and work with a project engineer to ensure projects remain on schedule.
Apply engineering standards including NEC, NESC, IEEE, and ANSI.
Apply corporate standard engineering practices and properly use the document management system.
Supervise project activities as assigned.
Communicate and coordinate project activities with project engineers, customer representatives, and others as needed.
Spend time at job sites to gain hands-on knowledge and additional training in substation construction and design.
Take personal responsibility for the quality and accuracy of work and bring potential project-related problems and possible solutions to the attention of the responsible party.
Travel out of town for short periods of time as required by projects and assignments.
Perform special projects and complete other duties as assigned or requested.

Deliver high-quality substation design packages that meet client specifications, enabling safe and reliable energization of critical electrical infrastructure.
Strengthen project execution by producing accurate, standards-compliant design documents and drawings that reduce field rework and support construction schedules.
Contribute technical depth to multidisciplinary project teams, ensuring protection & control and physical design elements are fully coordinated across disciplines.
Advance Dashiell’s engineering capability by building expertise across voltage classes and applying lessons learned to continuously improve design processes.
Support Dashiell’s growth by developing the technical skills and client relationships needed to take on increasing levels of engineering responsibility.
Required
Minimum Qualifications / Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, or equivalent degree, from an accredited university.
Minimum of 3 years of experience in substation engineering design; more senior-level placements require 7 or more years of hands-on engineering design experience.
Knowledge and understanding of substation systems and components from 34.5 kV to 500 kV, including their functions within a high-voltage substation.
Familiarity with electrical relays currently utilized in the electric power utility industry.
Experience in the design of electrical schematics for relay applications and control systems.
Experience in the design of connection drawings and cabling.
Strong knowledge of AC/DC fundamentals and three-phase power systems.
Knowledge and understanding of per-unit mathematics and symmetrical components.
Knowledge of engineering standards including NEC, NESC, IEEE, and ANSI.
Knowledge of design documents and drawings necessary to complete a project.
Proficiency in common word processing, spreadsheet, and email software.
Effective oral and written communication skills with the ability to work in a team environment.
Preferred
Licensed Professional Engineer (PE); if registered in a state other than where the engineer will practice, the employee must be able to obtain a license within one year of date of hire. Senior-level candidates are expected to hold or obtain a PE license.
Experience in application of relays and metering in an electrical substation at 138 kV and above.
Relay coordination experience.
Experience with engineering application software for ground grid design, relay coordination, transformer sizing, and load flow/short circuit studies.
Physical Requirements
LEVEL 2 - Office Professional (Light Mobility)
Ability to sit for extended periods during computer-based work.
Ability to stand and walk intermittently throughout the workday.
Occasional lifting of up to 20 pounds.
Occasional travel to other offices or meeting locations.
Environmental Conditions
Primarily climate-controlled office environment.
Occasional exposure to field or industrial environments during site visits.
