POSITION SUMMARY:
The Substation Design Engineer is responsible for supporting the design, engineering, and execution of utility substation projects. This role contributes to both protection & control (P&C) and physical design efforts, ensuring deliverables meet client requirements, industry standards, and safety regulations. The engineer collaborates with project teams to produce high-quality design packages while supporting project schedules and objectives.
PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Develop engineering design documents and drawings, including wiring diagrams, schematics, and bills of materials
Apply field mark-ups to produce accurate as-built drawings with minimal supervision
Perform engineering calculations such as relay burden, lighting, load flow, and short circuit analysis
Utilize engineering software for grounding design, relay coordination, transformer sizing, and system studies
Monitor and support project schedules in coordination with Project Engineers
Apply applicable standards including NEC, NESC, NEMA, IEEE, and ANSI
Maintain and manage project documentation using standard document control systems
Follow company engineering procedures and best practices
Coordinate with project engineers, clients, vendors, and internal stakeholders
Participate in site visits and fieldwork to gain practical experience in substation construction and design
Ensure accuracy, quality, and completeness of all assigned work
Identify potential issues and communicate solutions to project leadership
Travel occasionally to support project and field activities
Perform additional duties as assigned
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent) from an accredited institution
For senior-level candidates: Professional Engineer (PE) license required or ability to obtain within one year
Ability to obtain licensure in multiple states as needed
TECHNICAL SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE:
Relays & Metering: Familiarity with relay applications and metering systems for substations (typically 138kV and above)
Protection & Control Design: Experience developing schematics, wiring diagrams, cabling, and control system designs
Physical Design: Experience with substation layout and equipment design across various voltage levels
Engineering Studies: Ability to interpret grounding, lightning protection, short circuit, harmonics, reactive power, and relay coordination studies (performance capability is a plus)
Electrical Fundamentals: Strong understanding of AC/DC theory, three-phase systems, per-unit calculations, and symmetrical components
Substation Systems: Knowledge of substation components, layouts, and required design deliverables
Standards: Working knowledge of NEC, NESC, NEMA, IEEE, and ANSI requirements
Software: Proficiency with standard office tools (Word, Excel, Outlook) and engineering applications
PREFERRED SKILLS/ABILITIES:
Strong communication skills with the ability to work effectively with team members, clients, and vendors
Ability to work both independently and within a collaborative team environment
Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality work
Effective time management and organizational skills
Willingness to learn and grow within substation engineering and design

Salary: $130,000- $150,000 annually, dependent on experience, qualifications, and competencies.
