Studio Craftsmanship / Perceived Quality

We have an immediate opening for a Design Quality Engineer to support Studio Craftsmanship and perceived quality initiatives for Class-A automotive products and accessories.
What You’ll Be Doing
As a Design Quality Engineer, you will play a critical role in ensuring production intent matches design intent across interior and exterior components. This position focuses heavily on craftsmanship, surface quality, grain validation, appearance approvals, and supplier collaboration to achieve world-class fit, finish, and perceived quality.
Key responsibilities include:
Lead quality validation activities for Class-A automotive components and accessories
Review molded parts pre-grain to ensure tooling quality meets grain standards prior to approval
Document and communicate mold or surface defects and coordinate corrective actions with suppliers and engineering teams
Review and approve Pre-Grain Approval Sheets prior to tooling grain release
Evaluate AAR (Appearance Approval Report) parts including:
Wrapped components
Painted surfaces
Chrome finishes
Mold-In-Color (MIC) parts
Verify dimensional stability and visual craftsmanship readiness for PPAP signoff
Maintain detailed tracking and documentation for grain approvals, AAR submissions, and issue resolution
Support supplier visits and on-site investigations to root cause craftsmanship and appearance concerns
Collaborate closely with:
CMF (Color, Material & Finish) teams
Studio Design
Supplier Quality
Engineering
Tooling and Manufacturing teams
Ensure accurate “plaque-to-part” scaling and appearance consistency from concept through production
What We’re Looking For
5+ years of automotive industry experience
Strong background in perceived quality, craftsmanship, surface quality, or appearance validation
Experience working with molded, painted, wrapped, chrome, or textured automotive components
Ability to identify cosmetic, tooling, grain, and fit/finish concerns
Experience working cross-functionally with suppliers, engineering, CMF, and quality teams
Excellent documentation, communication, and organizational skills
Comfortable managing multiple programs in a fast-paced environment
Strong attention to detail and high quality standards
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree with 8+ years of related experience, or Master’s degree with 6+ years
Tooling or mold development experience
Experience supporting PPAP activities
Experience with craftsmanship reviews, grain approval, or AAR validation
Proficiency with Microsoft Office and reporting/documentation tools
