Staff Engineer – Substation Design

Position Overview
We are seeking a Staff Electrical Engineer with experience in high-voltage substation design to lead electrical engineering efforts on utility substation projects. This role will support the complete project lifecycle, including engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) activities for projects up to 765kV.
The ideal candidate will possess strong technical expertise in substation design, project leadership capabilities, and a Professional Engineer (PE) license.
Key Responsibilities
Engineering & Design
Serve as a Technical Specialist or Project Lead for electrical substation projects.
Support engineering design and EPC execution for substations ranging up to 765kV.
Develop protection and control design deliverables, including:
Protective relay schemes
Panel arrangements
One-line and three-line diagrams
AC/DC schematics
Relay panel wiring diagrams
Equipment wiring designs
Develop physical design deliverables, including:
Substation yard layouts
Grounding systems
Lightning protection systems
Control building layouts
Auxiliary AC/DC power systems
Project Management
Perform and oversee quality reviews of substation design packages.
Prepare electrical equipment specifications and Bills of Materials (BOMs).
Manage project schedules, budgets, and deliverables.
Coordinate with clients, vendors, subcontractors, and project stakeholders.
Present technical proposals, engineering solutions, and project updates.
Leadership & Business Support
Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior engineers.
Support business development initiatives and proposal efforts.
Participate in client meetings and project planning activities.
Travel as required for client meetings, design reviews, field verification, and construction support.
Required Qualifications
Education
Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
Experience
Minimum 5–7 years of experience in electrical substation design engineering.
Experience working on utility or EPC substation projects.
Previous experience with an engineering consulting firm is highly preferred.
Certifications
Professional Engineer (PE) License required.
Technical Skills
High-voltage substation design experience.
Strong knowledge of protection and control systems.
Experience developing physical and electrical substation design packages.
Proficiency with Bluebeam and related engineering design tools.
Compensation & Benefits
Base Salary: $125,000 – $237,000 annually
