The Senior Design Engineer is a highly experienced technical contributor responsible for designing innovative, efficient, and manufacturable Electrical Balance of System (EBOS) solutions for utility-scale photovoltaic (PV) projects. This role focuses on advanced technical execution, design accuracy, code compliance, and cross-functional collaboration to ensure optimized, buildable solutions that align with customer requirements and manufacturing capabilities.
The Senior Design Engineer will serve as a technical leader within the design engineering team, providing mentorship to junior engineers, supporting value engineering initiatives, and ensuring design integrity, speed, and scalability across projects. This role requires strong expertise in utility scale NEC-compliant PV system design, EBOS components including PV harnesses, DC feeders, and MV cabling, and the ability to interpret complex construction documentation and single-line diagrams.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:?
Technical Design & Engineering Execution
Develop customized EBOS design solutions for utility-scale solar projects, ensuring manufacturability, cost-efficiency, and alignment with customer specifications.
Create and update standard work documentation for internal use.
Design and engineer PV harnessing systems, DC collection systems, MV cable layouts, and associated EBOS components.
Interpret construction plan sets, site layouts, and single-line diagrams to create accurate and scalable design solutions.
Ensure all designs comply with NEC standards and align with applicable IEC, IEEE, and NETA standards where required.
Perform technical calculations including voltage drop, ampacity, short-circuit considerations, and system optimization.
Support proposal development by providing technical input for quotations and pre-sales engineering efforts.
Generate detailed drawings and documentation using AutoCAD and related engineering tools.
Ensure proper version control and documentation accuracy within engineering data management systems.
Value Engineering & Optimization
Identify cost-saving and performance-enhancing design alternatives while maintaining compliance and reliability.
Present multiple optimized EBOS solution pathways internally and, when required, to customers.
Collaborate with Sales and Project Engineering to balance technical excellence with commercial competitiveness.
Evaluate product configurations to improve installation efficiency, reduce material usage, and enhance system performance.
Quality, Compliance & Process Integrity
Participate in structured design review processes to ensure technical completeness and accuracy.
Support Root Cause Analyses (RCAs) and corrective actions related to design or field performance issues.
Contribute to the continuous improvement of design standards, templates, workflows, and best practices.
Ensure alignment between engineering deliverables and factory manufacturing processes to prevent rework and production inefficiencies.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Work closely with Sales and Business Development to support technical discussions, customer presentations, and proposal development.
Partner with Project Engineering to ensure seamless handoff from design to execution.
Collaborate with Production teams to confirm designs are buildable and clearly communicated to the factory.
Engage with Quality to ensure product reliability, compliance, and documentation traceability.
Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior engineers and support onboarding of new team members.
Work Experience/Education/Skills Requirements:?
Required
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Renewable Energy, or related technical discipline; or equivalent practical experience.
5+ years of experience in PV system design, EBOS engineering, or electrical design for utility-scale projects.
Strong working knowledge of NEC requirements and PV design principles.
Demonstrated expertise in EBOS components including PV harnesses, DC feeders, combiner systems, and MV cabling.
Ability to read and interpret construction plan sets, single-line diagrams, and complex electrical schematics.
Proficiency in AutoCAD.
Experience performing engineering calculations (voltage drop, conductor sizing, ampacity, etc.).
Experience using structured engineering documentation and data management systems.
Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present technical information clearly.
Preferred
Experience supporting manufacturing or production environments.
Knowledge of IEC, IEEE, and NETA standards.
Experience in utility-scale solar projects.
Familiarity with PVsyst or similar modeling tools.
Mandarin fluency is highly desirable, though not required.
Physical Requirements/Work Environment:?
Work is primarily performed in an office environment.
Ability to work at a computer for extended periods.
Comfortable working in a fast-growing, dynamic environment.
Traveling to customer sites and events (traveling up to 25%).
Applicants must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S. The Company will not sponsor or take over sponsorship of any employment visa, including without limitation, H-1B, O-1, E-3, TN status, or I-485 job portability or similar immigration processes.
Equal Employment Opportunity:?
Voltage is an equal opportunity employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees.
