Senior Physical Substation Design Engineer / Design Expert
Location: Baltimore / Washington, DC area preferred
Work Arrangement: Primarily remote, with local client travel and occasional travel to Georgia
Biren Patel Engineering is seeking a senior physical substation design expert to support utility substation engineering projects. This role is ideal for an experienced substation physical designer or engineer who enjoys reviewing design work, mentoring junior teams, supporting clients, and helping drive high-quality project execution.
The position will be primarily work-from-home, but the candidate should be located in or near the Baltimore / Washington, DC area and available for local utility client meetings, site visits, quality review page-turns, and post-construction inspections. Occasional travel to Georgia, typically about once per month, will also be required for project meetings, site visits, and support of Georgia-based utility work.
Key Responsibilities
Serve as a senior technical resource for physical substation design projects
Review drawing packages, material lists, and design deliverables prepared by junior engineers and outside engineering firms
Perform quality assurance reviews before deliverables are issued for construction
Support conceptual design development and constructability reviews
Lead or participate in client page-turn meetings, site visits, and in-office technical reviews
Perform post-construction inspections and field verifications before energization
Help junior engineering teams understand not only what to design, but why specific design decisions are made
Assist with scopes of work, RFPs, and coordination with other engineering contractors
Represent BPE professionally with utility clients in the Baltimore / Washington, DC region and Georgia
Desired Experience
Strong background in physical substation design for electric utilities
Experience with substation layouts, grounding, conduit/cable design, equipment arrangements, material lists, and construction drawing packages
Ability to review and comment on engineering deliverables with a practical, quality-focused mindset
Experience performing field inspections, construction walkdowns, and pre-energization verifications preferred
Comfortable working with junior engineering teams and explaining design standards and best practices
Prior utility, consulting, or EPC experience preferred
Strong communication skills and ability to serve as a trusted client-facing representative
This is a senior technical position with an emphasis on design quality, mentorship, client support, field verification, and practical utility substation experience.
