Position Overview
Wheeler Staffing Partners is seeking a detail-oriented and innovative Senior Substation Engineer to lead the design, development, and implementation of high-voltage substation projects. This role is responsible for performing and overseeing physical design activities for substations ranging from 4kV to 345kV, reviewing and sealing engineering documents, managing project execution, and providing technical leadership to engineering teams.
The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience in substation physical design, strong project management capabilities, and a Professional Engineer (PE) license in the State of Texas.
Key Responsibilities
Engineering Design & Technical Leadership
Lead the detailed physical design of high-voltage substation projects ranging from 4kV to 345kV.
Develop and oversee station physical layouts, sections and elevations, cable and conduit plans, grounding systems, control enclosure layouts, lightning protection systems, and yard lighting plans.
Review, approve, and seal engineering drawings, calculations, specifications, and design documentation.
Serve as the technical subject matter expert for advanced engineering concepts, principles, and methodologies.
Ensure compliance with applicable industry standards, client requirements, and regulatory guidelines.
Project Management & Execution
Manage substation projects from initial scoping through final design, implementation, and project closeout.
Coordinate project schedules, deliverables, and resource requirements to ensure successful project execution.
Maintain project documentation, including calculations, design decisions, technical correspondence, and engineering records.
Prepare project closeout documentation and support successful project completion.
Proposal Development & Client Support
Participate in EPC proposal development and project planning activities.
Prepare accurate project proposals, schedules, budgets, and cost estimates while maintaining established project margins.
Review construction pricing with EPC partners to ensure competitiveness and accuracy.
Present technical solutions and project proposals to clients as required.
Collaborate with project stakeholders to identify risks and develop mitigation strategies.
Quality Assurance & Field Support
Perform quality control reviews of engineering deliverables to ensure accuracy, completeness, and timely delivery.
Conduct field surveys and site assessments to gather information for engineering designs.
Perform construction inspections and field visits to verify compliance with engineering drawings and specifications.
Resolve technical engineering issues and conflicts throughout the project lifecycle.
Mentorship & Team Development
Mentor and train junior engineers and design staff.
Provide technical guidance and support to project teams.
Promote knowledge sharing and engineering best practices throughout the organization.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
Professional Engineer (PE) license in the State of Texas required.
Minimum 5–10 years of experience in high-voltage substation physical design.
Experience designing substation projects ranging from 4kV to 345kV.
Strong knowledge of substation layouts, grounding systems, control buildings, cable and conduit design, and protection systems.
Experience reviewing and sealing engineering documents.
Strong analytical and technical problem-solving skills.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to travel to project sites as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
EPC project experience.
Experience leading engineering teams and mentoring junior staff.
Experience supporting utility, transmission, and power delivery projects.
Strong project management and client-facing experience.
