About This Role
At hMetrix, we are transforming healthcare through data-driven solutions. We are seeking a Senior Healthcare Interoperability Engineer to lead the development and deployment of enterprise data pipelines. In this role, you will lead the transformation of complex, legacy billing and administrative datasets into modern, standard-compliant HL7 FHIR data structures, ultimately exposing them via secure APIs.
You will be the crucial bridge between public and private healthcare policies, data architecture, and modern API delivery. Leveraging cutting-edge cloud technologies, you will collaborate with and mentor a hybrid team of up to five analysts, software developers, and database architects. Your success will be measured by your ability to deliver efficient, secure, and compliant interoperability ecosystems for our clients and their beneficiaries.
What You'll Do
Strategy & Interoperability Design
Map & Architect Pipelines: Analyze raw healthcare administrative and transactional source systems (including demographics, encounters, enrollment, and provider directories) and construct comprehensive data mapping matrices to target FHIR resources.
Stakeholder Collaboration: Collaborate with program managers, clinical policy experts, and downstream API consumers to gather requirements and translate regulatory specifications into executable technical roadmaps.
Technical Execution & Data Transformation
High-Performance PySpark ETL: Design, review, and optimize robust ETL/ELT pipelines using Python, SQL, and PySpark to ingest, clean, and map massive healthcare transactional datasets.
FHIR: Oversee the translation of relational database tables or staging schemas into valid FHIR payloads, ensuring clean serialization, data validation, and optimal payload structure.
API Delivery Integration: Coordinate with software developers and cloud architects to load validated FHIR resources into high-performance FHIR storage solutions and servers to support outward-facing RESTful APIs.
Validation & Governance
Compliance & Schema Validation: Enforce strict validation protocols to ensure all generated FHIR resources conform to the relevant national and industry-standard Implementation Guides (IGs).
Monitoring & Optimizing: Proactively monitor the transformation pipeline's performance and system load, systematically identifying and resolving bottlenecks in large-scale data processing.
Data Governance & Security: Maintain rigorous compliance with HIPAA and relevant privacy regulations, especially regarding access scopes, secure identity management, and the protection of protected health information (PHI).
What You'll Bring
Required:
Education: Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Healthcare Informatics, Engineering, or a related technical field.
Core Experience: A minimum of four years of direct experience working in the healthcare domain (payers, providers, state health agencies, or health tech) with deep expertise in administrative healthcare claims and enrollment data.
Technical Mastery: A minimum of four years of direct experience writing advanced SQL, Python, and PySpark scripts to manage and transform large-scale datasets.
Cloud Proficiency: A minimum of two years of direct experience authoring cloud native data pipelines to manage and transform large-scale datasets.
Nice-to-Haves:
Interoperability & Standards: Practical, hands-on experience with HL7 FHIR resources, profiles, and implementation guides, alongside standard clinical, administrative, and billing terminologies (including standard diagnostic, procedure, and pharmacy code sets).
Security Standards: Understanding of modern secure authorization frameworks, federated identity standards (OAuth2, OIDC), and secure API access protocols.
