Job Description
Position Overview: As a Senior Electrical Engineer, you will utilize your design and analytical skills to develop products from concept to production. The new product development team designs innovative products for the card personalization business. Your experience with embedded hardware design, PWB/PWA design, embedded firmware development, prototyping, debugging, coordinating with vendors, and interfacing with manufacturing organizations will be key to success in this role. In this role, you will work in a fast-paced environment that values hands-on problem solving, rapid iteration, and continuous improvement through the evaluation of new technologies and tools. You will also have opportunities to contribute to system-level design decisions, collaborate across engineering disciplines, and grow into broader technical leadership responsibilities as your product and architecture knowledge develops. You will have the opportunity to develop electronics used in printing, smart card, RFID, motion control, and laser technologies.
Responsibilities:
Design, schematic capture, prototype, and support layout of microcontroller and microprocessor-based PWB/PWA designs from concept through production
Design and develop complex embedded systems involving mixed-signal design, high-speed interfaces, power supplies, and integration across hardware, firmware, mechanical, and manufacturing domains
Participate in system architecture discussions, design reviews, and technical tradeoff evaluations to support robust, scalable, and manufacturable product designs
Develop or support firmware and/or FPGA designs
Lead board bring-up, debugging, and root cause analysis of hardware issues, with the ability to independently drive issues to resolution
Test and verify new designs
Lead or support transition of designs into production
Contribute to electrical architecture, emerging technology evaluation, and technical direction within assigned projects
Work with vendors and sourcing to define technical requirements for components and subsystems
Design to and support qualification of products to applicable regulatory standards such as UL, FCC, and CE
Create and execute test plans for hardware and software validation
Design and implement test fixtures to verify circuit board and system functionality for production testing
Mentor junior engineers, technicians, and interns on design practices, debugging techniques, and product development processes
Basic Qualifications:
Bachelor’s of Science degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering
5+ years of experience in embedded hardware design, PWB/PWA design, schematic capture, layout support, and board bring-up, with demonstrated progression in ownership and technical responsibility
Demonstrated ability to independently design, bring up, debug, and deliver embedded hardware systems, printed wiring assemblies, or major electrical subsystems
Strong experience in analog and digital circuit design, including DC/DC power supplies, mixed-signal circuits, and common digital interfaces (e.g., SPI, I2C, UART, Ethernet, USB)
Experience developing in C/C++ and/or VHDL or Verilog
Ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams including engineers, lab technicians, product management, and manufacturing
Must be able to lawfully work within the US and have unrestricted work authorization
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with EE design tools (e.g., Mentor Graphics)
Strong experience designing printed wiring boards and printed wiring assemblies from concept through production, including schematic capture, component selection, layout guidance, board bring-up, verification, and manufacturing support
Experience participating in system-level design discussions, electrical architecture reviews, or cross-functional technical tradeoff decisions
Demonstrated interest in growing technical leadership capability, including mentoring others, influencing design direction, and developing broader product/system understanding
Experience with FPGA development tools (e.g., Xilinx, Microsemi, Intel/Altera)
Experience with smart card, RFID, NFC, printing, motion control, laser systems, or other electromechanical embedded systems
Working knowledge of project management concepts (timelines, costs, requirements, resources)
7+ years of experience in embedded hardware design, schematic capture, layout, and board bring-up
Demonstrated ownership of delivering high-quality designs with a focus on reliability, performance, and manufacturability
Curiosity and initiative in evaluating new technologies, tools, and design approaches, and applying them to improve development speed, product performance, or test efficiency
Experience working in fast-paced development environments with a rapid, iterative approach to design and debugging while maintaining engineering rigor
Openness to adopting modern development tools, including AI-assisted tools, to improve design efficiency, debugging, documentation, and engineering decision-making workflows
Where you will be: Minneapolis, MN, working in‑office Monday through Friday.
