Eaton’s Data Center Solutions portfolio plays a critical role in power, cooling, and infrastructure systems that support global digital transformation.

The Senior Product Design Engineer – Product Development is a technical lead responsible for the conceptualization, system architecture, mechanical design, and verification of modular Data Center Hot Aisle Containment (HAC) structures and platforms. This role ensures HAC solutions meet market requirements for performance, cost, safety, thermal effectiveness, schedule, aesthetics, and manufacturability.

The position also supports mechanical design, validation, and continuous improvement of existing Hot Aisle Containment product platforms, closing portfolio gaps and enabling scalable, configurable, and repeatable solutions for diverse data center environments.

The Senior Product Design Engineer collaborates closely with Product Management, Sales, Application Engineering, Manufacturing, Field Services, Suppliers, and Customers to translate data center requirements, site constraints, and thermal strategies into robust, installable, and manufacturable HAC solutions.

What You’ll Do

Key Responsibilities

Data Center Hot Aisle Containment Product Development

Lead the development of new Hot Aisle Containment product platforms, kits, and configurable architectures using a structured phase/gate NPD process
Define and document system-level and modular HAC architectures, including support structures, doors, panels, sealing strategies, and mounting interfaces
Translate data center market requirements (thermal efficiency, airflow containment, scalability, code compliance, and ease of installation) into detailed technical specifications
Establish and manage development schedules, resource plans, cost targets, and risk mitigation strategies

Mechanical Design & Analysis

Design data center-centric structural and sheet metal systems, including building-mounted and freestanding containment structures
Create 3D parametric solid models and 2D production drawings per ISO and ASME Y14 standards (Creo/Pro E preferred)
Specify materials, coatings, finishes, and fabrication processes optimized for data center environments, durability, and cost
Perform engineering calculations related to structural loads, deflection, seismic considerations, anchoring, and load paths
Utilize FEA and/or CFD analysis to support:
Structural integrity and code compliance
Thermal and airflow containment effectiveness
Optimization of material usage and system rigidity
Verification, Validation & Compliance

Define test standards and verification/validation plans specifically for Hot Aisle Containment systems
Coordinate and execute structural, functional, and thermal performance testing (internal and external)
Analyze test results, document findings, and implement corrective actions
Ensure compliance with applicable building codes, seismic requirements, fire protection considerations, and third‑party certifications applicable to data center containment structures

Cross-Functional Collaboration & Documentation

Serve as technical lead for HAC installation guides, assembly instructions, field modification guidelines, and technical documentation
Interface with manufacturing, procurement, suppliers, and installers to resolve design, quality, and production issues
Support cost reduction, standardization, modularization, and quality improvement initiatives across the containment portfolio
Contribute to continuous improvement of Eaton’s NPD processes and data center product development practices

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) from an accredited institution and 5 years relevant experience or Associate degree with advanced technical training and 10+ years of relevant experience
Legally authorized to work in the United States without company sponsorship
Demonstrated experience designing Data Center Hot Aisle Containment systems or closely related data center infrastructure products
Experience developing engineered product platforms using a structured phase/gate development methodology
Candidates must reside within 50 miles of the location listed on the job description

Preferred Qualifications

Direct experience designing Hot Aisle Containment structures for data centers, including:
Support structures, doors, panels, and sealing solutions
Integration with racks, cabinets, overhead cable trays, and cooling infrastructure
Structural steel and sheet metal design experience, including load path analysis and connection design
Experience with building-mounted and freestanding containment systems
Knowledge of seismic, wind, and code-driven loading requirements applicable to data center structures
Proficiency with sheet metal fabrication, welding, and fastener selection
