The Nadkarni Laboratory at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School is seeking a highly motivated Research Engineer to help develop next-generation microfluidic and bioinstrumentation technologies for clinical applications. Our lab works at the intersection of engineering, coagulation science, and translational diagnostics. We develop integrated microfluidic systems and point-of-care optical technologies with applications ranging from thrombosis and hemostasis to real-time therapeutic monitoring. This is an ideal role for an early-career engineer looking for hands-on research and development experience in an interdisciplinary translational research environment.
Key Responsibilities:
• Design and prototype microfluidic and benchtop optical systems
• Develop CAD models, fixtures, and experimental hardware
• Support fabrication, assembly, and testing of prototype devices
• Conduct benchtop experiments and system characterization
• Interface with biological assays and clinical sample workflows
• Analyze experimental data and support iterative system optimization
• Collaborate closely with engineers, scientists, clinicians, and industry partners
• Contribute to translation of laboratory prototypes toward clinically-deployable diagnostic systems
Qualifications:
• BS or MS in Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field
• Strong hands-on prototyping and laboratory skills
• Experience with CAD and mechanical design tools
• Excellent troubleshooting and experimental problem-solving ability
• Ability to work independently in a fast-paced interdisciplinary environment
Preferred Experience:
• Microfluidics or fluid handling systems
• Diagnostics, bioinstrumentation, or medical devices
• Laboratory experience in handling clinical or biological samples
• 3D printing, soft lithography, machining, or rapid prototyping
• Sensor/instrument integration
• Programming or data analysis (MATLAB, Python, LabVIEW, etc.)
This position offers the opportunity to work closely with clinicians and translational researchers at MGH/HMS and contribute to technologies with real clinical impact.
