Senior RF Test Engineer — Photonics
Santa Barbara, CA | Hybrid | Full-time
The Opportunity
A fast growing photonics technology company is looking for a Senior RF Test Engineer to join its test engineering team in Southern California. This position focuses on developing and automating test solutions for advanced silicon photonics devices and Photonic Integrated Circuits (PICs) at the wafer, die, and packaged device level. A major focus will be high speed RF and optical characterization, including S-parameter and eye diagram testing for next generation optical devices and transceivers.
What You'll Do
Develop custom test hardware and automated test software for wafer and die level photonic testing
Build and execute high speed test solutions for 100–400 Gb/s eye diagram characterization
Perform DVT testing on next generation high speed optical transceivers
Characterize devices using equipment such as VNAs, BERTs, DCAs, AWGs, and related RF/optical instrumentation
Perform S-parameter measurements and high speed RF characterization
Match experimental measurements to modulator equivalent circuit models
Develop and evaluate methods for measuring laser relative intensity noise (RIN)
Write and debug Python test automation and data acquisition scripts
Analyze test results using Python, JMP, or similar tools
Develop test plans, interpret results, troubleshoot issues, and communicate findings across engineering teams
Support test equipment maintenance, calibration, and laboratory infrastructure
What We're Looking For
Advanced degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related technical discipline
Strong experience with high speed RF testing
Experience testing photonics, optoelectronic devices, silicon photonics, or PICs
Hands-on experience with RF/high-speed equipment such as VNAs, BERTs, DCAs, and AWGs
Experience with S-parameters, eye diagrams, and high speed device characterization
Strong Python programming and test automation experience
Experience with automated data acquisition and technical data analysis
Ability to fit experimental data to device or circuit models
Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills
Comfortable working independently in a fast moving engineering environment
Strong technical communication and documentation skills
Particularly Relevant Experience
Candidates coming from backgrounds involving silicon photonics, optical transceivers, high speed modulators, electro optic device characterization, RF photonics, semiconductor device test, or high speed optical communications should be particularly well aligned.
Compensation & Benefits
Competitive base salary plus equity and a comprehensive benefits package, including health coverage, 401(k) support, and flexible PTO.
Company details will be shared with qualified candidates during the recruitment process.
