R&D Embedded Design Engineer
Purpose
Deliver advanced engineering solutions through the integration of mixed-signal, microprocessor-based, and FPGA-based hardware subsystems. The role also includes significant involvement in algorithm development and encryption research.
Summary
A significant portion of the employee’s role will involve researching new technologies and applying those insights to the development of new products. They bring a strong engineering background and the ability to address complex problems quickly and effectively. As an Embedded Design Engineer, they are expected to have experience across a wide range of microprocessor-based development platforms, with particular expertise in resource-constrained systems where efficiency and optimization are critical.
Duties Critical to Success
Perform R&D tasks which lead to the development of future products or embedded subsystems.
Development of desktop or mobile applications to perform engineering analysis or develop customized production tools.
Develop desktop and mobile applications for engineering analysis and customized production tools.
Train and mentor employees in reverse engineering techniques and procedures.
Apply reverse engineering tools and methods to identify key functions and processes in integrated circuits, board-level systems, and embedded software.
Contribute to team-based problem solving and project planning.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Critical to Success
Design, analysis, and implementation of communications protocols in Radio Frequency (RF) devices, and/or common automotive data buses
Schematic capture and PCB layout for internal development boards and production products
Experience with reverse engineering processes and procedures
Software development experience for embedded systems
Experience in serial communication protocols e.g., I2C, SPI, UART etc.
Knowledge of cryptography, including stream and block ciphers, hashing algorithms, and pseudo-random number generation
Logic design experience, preferably with familiarity in VHDL or Verilog modeling
Ability to design and develop test/programming fixtures, including necessary hardware/software interfaces
Familiarity with applying artificial intelligence (AI) techniques to improve embedded system efficiency and optimize development processes is desirable
Deliverables
RKE/PKE systems for a wide range of vehicles, contributing to 1-2 product designs per year
Contributions to product-related patents
Hardware or software tools for advanced signal or behavioral analysis using analog and/or digital subsystems
Production test fixtures to support our internal production line as needed
Relations to supervisory and subordinating roles within the company
Immediate Supervisor: R&D Manager or NPI Manager
Direct Reports: None
Job specifications, standards, and requirements
BS/MS degrees in electrical, electronics, or computer engineering. At least 3-4 years of industry experience that demonstrates success delivering embedded projects
Mixed-signal design and analysis skills (board or ASIC level)
Experience in qualifying products through all phases of FCC certification
C, C++, Python, or Labview software development experience
Experience on a broad range of computing platforms
Excellent teamwork and communication skills
Essential Job Functions (ADA-Compliant)
The following essential job functions are fundamental to the successful performance of the Embedded Design Engineer role and cannot be eliminated or significantly modified without changing the nature of the position:
Physical Requirements
Ability to sit, stand, walk, or remain in a stationary position for extended periods as required by job tasks
Adequate hearing and vision (corrected or uncorrected) to perform job duties, including reading printed materials, viewing screens, communicating via telephone or computer, and understanding verbal communication in various settings
Adequate vision, including close-up work, to inspect small components and read detailed instructions
Sufficient auditory capacity to follow verbal instructions and hear alerts from production equipment
Vision abilities required include close, distance, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus
Capacity for peripheral vision and depth perception to safely navigate workspaces
Manual dexterity and coordination sufficient for typing, data entry, and computer use
Manual dexterity to handle small parts, hand tools, and assembly fixtures in a safe and efficient manner
Manual dexterity to work with delicate electronic components, small tools, and precision devices requiring fine motor skills
Ability to use and wear personal protective equipment (PPE) as required by the work environment
Ability to operate lab equipment as needed for purposes such as prototype testing and quality assurance
Ability to speak clearly and be understood to convey instructions and exchange information
Ability to communicate clearly and professionally, both verbally and in writing, with individuals and groups in person, via virtual meetings, and over the phone
Work Environment
Ability to travel to various locations, including client sites, field locations, or training venues
Capacity to work in diverse environments, which may include office settings, manufacturing or production areas, outdoor locations, or client facilities, sometimes with varying temperatures, noise levels, or exposure to dust, fumes, or chemicals
