We are looking for an experienced and hands-on Project Research Engineer – Mechanical Engineering to take ownership of medical-device development projects from concept to prototype, testing and industry transfer.

Job Summary
The Project Research Engineer will be responsible for the end-to-end mechanical design and development of medical devices. The role involves understanding clinical/user requirements, concept development, CAD modelling, engineering calculations and simulations, prototyping, testing, risk management, manufacturing coordination, documentation and design transfer.

Key Responsibilities
Medical Device Design & Development
Understand clinical/user needs and translate them into measurable engineering and design requirements.
Generate concepts and lead end-to-end mechanical design and development of medical devices.
Work with clinicians, researchers, engineers, vendors and industry partners throughout the product-development cycle.
Take technical ownership of assigned projects, timelines and deliverables.
Mechanical Design, Analysis & Simulation
Develop 3D CAD models, assemblies, mechanisms, fixtures and tooling using SOLIDWORKS or equivalent software.
Prepare engineering drawings with GD&T, tolerances, tolerance stack-up and BOMs.
Perform engineering calculations and design analysis related to strength, loads, motion, mechanisms and other relevant parameters.
Perform engineering simulations using ANSYS or equivalent simulation software to evaluate structural integrity, deformation, stress, strain, fatigue and other relevant performance parameters.
Correlate simulation results with analytical calculations and experimental test results and optimize designs accordingly.
Select suitable materials, components and manufacturing processes considering performance, safety, cost and manufacturability.
Prototyping & Product Development
Develop and evaluate functional prototypes using 3D printing, machining, turning, milling, sheet metal, injection moulding and other manufacturing processes.
Perform design iterations based on simulation, prototype evaluation and testing.
Troubleshoot design, assembly and manufacturing issues and implement engineering improvements.
Testing, Risk Management & Quality
Develop test methods and protocols and conduct functional, mechanical, performance and reliability testing.
Analyze simulation and experimental results and implement design improvements.
Perform DFMEA, risk assessment and risk-control activities throughout product development.
Support design verification and validation activities.
Maintain technical, design, simulation and testing documentation in accordance with applicable QMS and medical-device development procedures.
Manufacturing, Vendors & Design Transfer
Apply DFM/DFA principles to optimize designs for manufacturing, assembly, quality and scalability.
Coordinate with vendors for prototype and pilot manufacturing.
Communicate technical requirements, drawings and specifications and review manufactured components/prototypes.
Troubleshoot manufacturing and assembly issues.
Support design transfer from R&D to industry/manufacturing partners.
Documentation & Technical Communication
Prepare and maintain engineering drawings, BOMs, specifications, simulation reports, design reports, test reports and development records.
Participate in design reviews and technical discussions.
Present engineering concepts, simulation results, design decisions and project progress to internal and external stakeholders.
Contribute to technical demonstrations, exhibitions, workshops and knowledge-sharing activities.

Educational Qualification
M.E./M.Tech. in Mechanical Engineering with a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience
OR
B.E./B.Tech. in Mechanical Engineering with a minimum of 6 years of relevant experience

Required Experience & Skills
Strong hands-on experience in mechanical product design and development.
Experience in taking products from concept to prototype, simulation, testing, iteration and manufacturing/transfer.
Proficiency in SOLIDWORKS or equivalent 3D CAD software.
Working experience with ANSYS or equivalent simulation software.
Strong knowledge of engineering mechanics, machine design, materials and manufacturing processes.
Experience in engineering calculations, FEA, CFD, simulation, design analysis and troubleshooting.
Good knowledge of engineering drawings, GD&T, tolerance stack-up and BOM development.
Experience in DFMEA and design risk management.
Understanding of DFM/DFA principles.
Hands-on experience in prototype development, fabrication, assembly and testing.
Knowledge of CNC machining, 3D printing, sheet metal, injection moulding and conventional manufacturing processes.
Experience in coordinating with external vendors for prototype/pilot manufacturing.
Strong problem-solving, analytical and communication skills.
Ability to work independently, take ownership and work effectively in a multidisciplinary R&D environment.

Preferred Experience
Experience in medical device design and development.
Experience working with clinicians, healthcare professionals or end users.
Experience in mechanical/electromechanical medical-device development.
Strong experience in FEA, structural, thermal, fatigue or other relevant engineering simulations.
Knowledge of ISO 13485 and medical-device Quality Management Systems.
Familiarity with IEC 60601 and other relevant medical-device standards.
Experience in design verification and validation.
Experience in medical-device risk management and technical documentation.
Experience in technology/design transfer to industry.
Experience in managing manufacturing vendors and industry partners.
