PROJECT ENGINEER JOB DESCRIPTION
The Project Engineer collaborates closely with sales, engineering, and operations teams to identify, develop, design, and manage energy and water conservation projects for clients. Responsibilities include creating detailed scopes of work that are quantified, priced, and presented across various vertical and geographic markets. The role entails travel for facility surveys and project execution, utilizing data capture methods such as electronic data capture, digital and infrared photography, ultrasound testing, and note-taking for RFP to IGA proposal generation, as well as project reporting. A home office is essential for backend tasks including proposal development, design work, and project management.
The Project Engineer also functions as a project manager by selecting and managing subcontractors, specifying equipment, overseeing installation, coordinating commissioning, and providing on-site support. The position includes training in data modeling, budgeting project costs, and honing project engineering and management skills. Physical fitness is necessary for site walkdowns and accessing specific project areas.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Adhere to SMI safety rules, ensure compliance
Conduct site surveys/audits/walk downs/LIDAR scanning in a safe and professional manner
Develop and design mechanical scopes of work to be installed, including
Model costs and savings for developed scopes of work
Size and select required components and capital equipment
CAD design (2D & 3D) and drawing development as required for engineering deliverables
Manage project implementation
Maintain organized project folders
Work with and understand operations department functions and stakeholders
Interact with customer personnel to gain knowledge of scope and access to work areas
Maintain written status to SMI Sales, Engineering & Operations on project and implementation status
Maintain written status updates to customer
Maintain open lines of communication with customer, subcontractor, and SMI management
Uphold Steam Management’s Standards of Quality and Excellence
Other related duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS
Travel as needed (approximately 50% - 60% average)
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering (ME) or related field
5-15 years of experience in a related role (extensive applicable professional experience considered as a substitute for an engineering degree)
Hands-on piping and mechanical skills, including experience in steam system maintenance (preferred)
Project management experience
Client facing experience
Experience with energy performance contracts (preferred)
Proficiency in MS Office suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, Teams, Project)
Proficiency in Autodesk CAD software (AutoCAD, Plant 3D, Navisworks, Revit)
Ability to read and interpret piping, HVAC schematics
Experience in HVAC electrical and controls design preferred
Experience in process design (P&IDs, PFDs, heat and mass balance, equipment selection, energy calculations, etc.) preferred
Equipment surveying experience - steam traps, insulation, compressed air, LIDAR scanning (preferred, but will train)
Ability to work independently and remotely on projects
Proven ability to drive tasks forward while awaiting necessary information
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Strong technical writing skills
Professional demeanor and strong ability to collaborate effectively with all project stakeholders
Enthusiasm about our work and vision, eagerness to have involvement in projects from business development through commissioning

$90 – 110K annually plus bonus
