Position Overview
The Project Engineer supports the Project Manager and field leadership team in the planning, coordination, documentation, and tracking of heavy civil construction projects. This role is heavily involved in project controls, quantity tracking, Bluebeam takeoffs, submittals, RFIs, daily reporting, and field support for earthwork, underground utilities, grading, paving, and structures.
The Project Engineer plays an important role in connecting field operations with project management by helping maintain accurate records, tracking installed work, supporting cost and schedule control, and ensuring timely flow of information between the field, office, subcontractors, suppliers, and owner representatives.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Support the Project Manager and Superintendent with day-to-day coordination of project activities.
Track quantities installed for key civil scopes including earthwork, grading, underground utilities, paving, and structures.
Perform Bluebeam takeoffs and drawing reviews to support quantity tracking, progress validation, field planning, pay applications, and change management.
Maintain quantity logs, material tracking logs, and other project controls documentation.
Assist in preparing, submitting, and tracking RFIs, submittals, shop drawings, and product data.
Help maintain current plan sets, as-builts, redlines, and project documentation.
Support change order documentation by collecting field quantities, takeoff backup, sketches, and drawing revisions.
Assist with daily reports, meeting minutes, inspection logs, and other required project records.
Coordinate with field supervision, survey, subcontractors, and suppliers to support production tracking and work planning.
Assist in reviewing plans and specifications for scope requirements, conflicts, and constructability issues.
Support procurement and material delivery tracking to help ensure crews have what they need to stay productive.
Help verify work-in-place quantities for billing, forecasting, and cost tracking.
Assist with vendor and subcontractor invoice review by comparing billing to installed quantities and completed work.
Participate in project meetings with internal teams, subcontractors, and owners as needed.
Promote jobsite safety and support compliance with company standards and contract requirements.

Maintain organized project files and correspondence.
Support permit, inspection, and closeout documentation.
Assist with short-term schedule updates and production planning.
Help maintain positive working relationships with field crews, subcontractors, suppliers, engineers, inspectors, and owners.
Ensure timely completion of project paperwork and documentation.
Job Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Construction Science, or related discipline preferred.
1 to 4 years of experience in heavy civil, underground utilities, earthwork, paving, grading, or site development preferred.
Strong interest in field operations, project controls, and quantity management.
Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and civil plan sets.
Experience with or willingness to learn Bluebeam for takeoffs, drawing review, and quantity tracking.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
Experience with Procore, HCSS, or similar construction software is a plus.
Strong communication, organization, and follow-through skills.
Ability to work under pressure in a fast productive environment.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Flexibility to work in a number of diverse locations as project needs change.
Expected Hours: Hours will vary by job, location and season. Working a night shift may be required.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Typical office environment with regular visits to construction sites outdoors and indoors.
Frequent walking on active jobsites and uneven terrain.
Sitting long periods at a desk using a computer.
Exposure to varying weather and active construction environments.
Some travel required.
