PROJECT ENGINEER (Automotive, Logistics, Supply Chain)
Position Type: Direct Hire
Location: Taylor, Romulus or Canton, MI
Salary: $75K-$90K
Job Overview
The Project Engineer plays a critical role in supporting new business launches, facility expansions, and operational improvement initiatives within the automotive 3PL logistics environment. This role is responsible for cost estimating, process design, facility layout, capital purchases, and continuous improvement efforts to optimize cost, capacity, and performance. The Project Engineer collaborates cross-functionally with Operations, Quality, IT, and Project Management to deliver solutions that meet customer and business requirements.
Responsibilities and Duties
Cost Estimating
-Develop cost models for new and existing business opportunities.
-Support RFQ responses with detailed engineering analysis, layouts, labor requirements, and equipment requirements.
-Provide data-driven recommendations to ensure competitiveness and profitability.
Project Launch Support
-Support facility, equipment, and process readiness for new program launches.
-Collaborate with Project Managers to ensure timelines and deliverables are achieved.
-Conduct trials, validations, and process capability studies.
Capital Purchases
-Identify, evaluate, and recommend capital equipment for material handling, storage, and automation.
-Develop business cases and ROI analyses for capital projects.
-Manage vendor relationships, quotes, and procurement process in partnership with purchasing.
Cost Reduction & Continuous Improvement
-Lead and support initiatives to reduce costs through process optimization, layout changes, and technology improvements.
-Apply Lean and Six Sigma methodologies to eliminate waste and improve efficiency.
Facility Layout & Capacity Planning
-Create and optimize facility layouts using CAD tools.
-Analyze current and future capacity requirements based on volume forecasts.
-Design workflows for maximum space utilization, safety, and throughput.
Process Design & Optimization
-Develop and document standardized operating processes and work instructions.
-Evaluate current processes for bottlenecks, inefficiencies, or quality risks.
-Implement engineering solutions to improve productivity and quality.
-Perform time studies to support quoting, target setting, and performance evaluations.
Data Analysis & Reporting
-Collect and analyze operational data to support decision-making.
-Build reports and dashboards to monitor KPI’s such as labor productivity, capacity utilization, and cost performance.
-Present insights and recommendations to leadership and project teams.
Qualifications
3-7 years of engineering experience in logistics, automotive, or supply chain environments.
Knowledge of 3PL operations, warehousing, and transportation solutions.
Exceptional communication, time management, and organizational skills.
Proficiency with CAD software and data analysis tools
Strong knowledge of Microsoft applications such as Word, Excel, Project, and Power Point.
Ability to work as a team and independently with minimal direction.
Strong problem-solving and root cause analysis skills.
Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, customer-driven environment.
