Civil Project Engineer

Position Overview
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Civil Project Engineer to support heavy civil construction projects throughout the Chicago area and surrounding regions. This role is responsible for assisting project teams with planning, coordination, scheduling, documentation, cost control, and field execution on complex infrastructure projects including underground utilities, transportation, earthwork, foundations, and energy-related construction.

Key Responsibilities
Support Project Managers and Superintendents with daily project operations and field activities
Assist in project planning, scheduling, budgeting, and forecasting efforts
Coordinate subcontractors, suppliers, inspectors, and internal project teams
Prepare and maintain RFIs, submittals, change orders, daily reports, and project documentation
Track quantities, production rates, labor hours, and material deliveries
Review project drawings and specifications to ensure compliance with contract requirements
Monitor project costs and assist with cost control initiatives
Participate in project meetings with owners, engineers, and field personnel
Support procurement activities and material tracking
Assist with project safety initiatives and promote compliance with company and regulatory safety standards
Conduct field inspections and verify work quality and progress
Help identify project risks and develop solutions to maintain schedule and productivity
Maintain strong communication between office and field operations
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or related field
1–5 years of experience in heavy civil or infrastructure construction preferred
Internship or co-op experience in construction is highly valued
Strong understanding of construction methods, scheduling, and project coordination
Ability to read and interpret civil drawings, specifications, and contracts
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite; experience with project management software is preferred
Knowledge of AutoCAD, Bluebeam, Primavera P6, HCSS, or similar construction software is a plus
Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment
Willingness to travel to regional job sites as needed
Preferred Experience
Experience in one or more of the following areas is highly desirable:
Underground utilities
Heavy highway and bridge construction
Earthwork and grading
Foundations and deep excavation
Energy or pipeline infrastructure
Concrete structures
Industrial civil construction
Physical Requirements
Ability to work in both office and active construction site environments
Ability to walk uneven terrain and navigate construction sites safely
Occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds
Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
