Product Development Engineer – Mechanic’s Tools
REPORTS TO: VP of Engineering
INTERACTS WITH: Engineering Team, Product Managers, Industrial Designers, International Operations Team, Suppliers, Customers, Operations
JOB DESCRIPTION: We are looking for an engineer with a passion for developing innovative new products - taking them from concept to production. The position will be located in the Greenville, South Carolina area. This individual will work closely with other engineers, product and category managers, project managers and suppliers developing, validating and launching new world class cordless power tools, hand tools and air tools for the professional market. The individual will also work with the quality team and suppliers sustaining legacy products throughout the product life cycle.
Responsibilities include:
· Working as part of a collaborative team throughout the new product development process working closely with product managers, sourcing, quality and suppliers to ensure that new products meet the customer driven specifications.
· Interaction with suppliers throughout the design process tracking adherence to schedule, cost and performance.
· Lead early-stage concept development for new products, features, and performance improvements based on customer needs and market trends
· Translate product ideas into functional prototypes and testable engineering concepts
· Conduct competitive benchmarking and product teardowns to inform innovation direction
· Identify patentable innovations and support intellectual property development
· Creation of solid models and detailed drawings of new and updated components.
· Provide detailed design layouts, component drawings and tolerance analysis.
· Design, build, and evaluate prototypes using internal resources and external suppliers
· Develop and execute product test plans to validate performance, durability, and usability
· Analyze test data to drive iterative design improvements
· Perform required design calculations.
· Develop and execute product test plans
· Evaluate and engineering change requests.
· Interface with customers for design feedback and refinement.
· Assist quality team with supplier assessments and implementation of quality systems and policies to ensure products are manufactured using capable processes that will deliver consistent quality and performance.
· Work with suppliers to establish CTQ (Critical to Quality) requirements for critical components.
· Support of existing product lines with a focus on warranty reduction and field failures analysis.
Job Requirements
· Strong Mechanical background
· Experience in design of industrial consumer products
· Basic project management skills and the ability to lead a project team through indirect influence
· Have a strong sense of urgency to drive on time on cost projects
· Ability to work as part of a collaborative team
· Fluency and experience with Solidworks CAD platform
· Organizational and planning skills
· Travel to Asia may be required 1-2 times per year, typically for 2 weeks at a time but with the possibility of a 4-6 week stay on occasion.
· Ability to work autonomously with a pro-active strategic approach to challenges
· Attention to detail
· Quality systems knowledge
· Strong root cause analysis skills.
· Excellent oral and written communication skills
· Able to be critical and accept criticism
· Proficient in use of MS Office software, Excel. Word, PowerPoint
· Self-motivation, personal discipline, good character and the ability to work independently.
· Excellent time management skills and demonstrated ability to handle multiple tasks and assignments simultaneously
· While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and walk; use hands and fingers to grasp and feel; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear.
Desired Education and Experience
· Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or equivalent technical degree and experience with equivalent qualifications.
· Experience with innovation in industrial products preferred.
· Automotive hobbyist a plus
· 2-4 years of experience
