Principal Communications Engineer / Senior Electrical Engineer

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced Principal Communications Engineer / Senior Electrical Engineer to lead the design and development of next-generation cellular and IP-based emergency communications products and connected systems.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in electronic circuit design and embedded firmware development, combined with hands-on experience developing IP-based networking products, cellular communications, and cloud-connected embedded devices.

This is a senior technical position for an engineer capable of working across the complete product-development lifecycle—from system architecture and circuit design through embedded firmware, communications protocols, prototype development, testing, certification, and production release. You will have substantial influence over the architecture and technical direction of current and future communications products and will serve as a senior technical resource within the engineering organization.

Responsibilities

Design and develop electronic hardware for embedded cellular and IP-based communications and networking products.
Develop embedded firmware for microprocessor- and microcontroller-based systems.
Develop products incorporating Ethernet, TCP/IP, UDP, and other IP-based networking technologies and protocols.
Design and integrate cellular communications, including LTE/4G/5G and related modem technologies.
Develop embedded products capable of secure communication with cloud-based platforms and services.
Develop and implement device-to-cloud and cloud-to-device communications protocols and interfaces.
Perform schematic design, component selection, circuit analysis, prototype development, debugging, and design verification.
Develop low-level firmware, device drivers, communications stacks, diagnostic functions, and application-level embedded software.
Develop product integrations using serial and IP communication protocols
Integrate wired and wireless communications technologies into embedded products.
Troubleshoot complex hardware, firmware, networking, and communications issues.
Participate in system architecture and make technical decisions involving hardware, firmware, communications, networking, and cloud connectivity.
Work closely with software, cloud, systems, test, manufacturing, and product-development teams.
Develop engineering documentation including design specifications, interface specifications, test procedures, and technical documentation.
Support regulatory, product safety, EMC, wireless, and industry certification activities.
Mentor junior and mid-level engineers and provide technical leadership throughout the product-development process.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline. Master’s degree preferred.
10+ years of professional engineering experience involving electronic product development.
Significant hands-on experience with analog and digital electronic circuit design.
Strong experience developing embedded firmware in C/C++.
Experience with microcontrollers, microprocessors, memory, peripheral devices, and embedded hardware interfaces.
Demonstrated experience developing IP-connected embedded products.
Strong understanding of TCP/IP networking and network communications protocols.
Experience integrating and developing products utilizing cellular communications technologies.
Experience developing embedded devices that communicate with cloud-based applications, platforms, or services.
Experience with communications interfaces and protocols such as Ethernet, UART, SPI, I²C, USB, RS-232/RS-485, or similar technologies.
Strong hardware and firmware troubleshooting skills using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, protocol analyzers, network diagnostic tools, and other electronic test equipment.
Demonstrated ability to independently take complex electronic products from concept through prototype, verification, and production.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in one or more of the following areas would be highly desirable:
IoT and machine-to-machine communications
MQTT, HTTPS, REST APIs, WebSockets, TLS or similar Internet/cloud protocols
Embedded Linux or real-time operating systems
Real time operating systems such as FreeRTOS
Cellular modem/module integration and AT-command interfaces
Ethernet controllers, switches, routers, and network interface technologies
Cybersecurity and secure communications for embedded devices
Encryption, authentication, certificates, secure boot, and firmware signing
Remote firmware updates and OTA firmware deployment
Cloud platforms such as AWS, Microsoft Azure, or equivalent environments
High-reliability, life-safety, security, industrial, public-safety, or mission-critical communications systems
