Description
As a Staff Engineer at Pave, you will work directly with the CTO to define and drive the technical foundation that powers money movement and portfolio management for advisors and their clients. This role sits at the intersection of architecture, execution, and cross-functional leadership. This is the senior technical anchor for the engineering team: the go-to person for advice on technical decision making, the owner of code quality, and the voice that shapes how we build systems that need to be reliable, secure, and scalable. You will work across a broad technical surface area, from designing the backend services that enable reliable trade execution and back-office operations to shaping the frontend experiences that guide advisors through onboarding and portfolio management workflows. Our current engineering priorities include improving system reliability, integration of our market insights into LLM generated user content, shipping features for enterprise clients, and building the infrastructure to support our next phase of growth.

If you are passionate about finance and ready to do meaningful work making investing more accessible for everyone, this is the position for you.

What We’re Looking For
We're looking for a self-directed engineer who thrives in ambiguous environments and brings strong instincts about what work matters most. You know how to prioritize with clarity, identifying the highest leverage work and making deliberate decisions about what to defer. You're energized by working across an organization, as comfortable talking to Legal and Go-to-Market as you are reviewing code, and excited by the pace and scope of an early-stage startup. As a true IC role, you will have the autonomy to take on initiatives that interest you most, working on the problems you find most technically compelling alongside the team's core priorities.

Responsibilities
• Own code quality across the engineering team: lead reviews, set the bar, and establish patterns others follow
• Make high-leverage architectural decisions that compound over time, with particular focus on reliability, security, and scalability
• Drive engineering standards across new and existing systems, including consistent UI patterns, error handling, and testing practices
• Partner with product and design to translate complex requirements into sound technical solutions, balancing tradeoffs across compliance, UX, and performance
• Support and grow a team of engineers through mentorship, structured walkthroughs, and on-call shadowing sessions
• Lead or contribute to cross-functional technical initiatives such as LLM integration, design of our new Developer APIs product, and a trade flow redesign
• Identify systemic issues and own the remediation, not just the fix

Required Qualifications
• 7+ years of software engineering experience, with a track record at senior or staff level
• Strong proficiency in Node.js and TypeScript (backend) and React Native or React Web (frontend)
• Experience building and maintaining RESTful APIs in production environments
• Demonstrated ability to own architecture decisions and lead technical direction across a team or codebase
• Experience in code review leadership: setting standards, identifying systemic issues, and elevating others through the review process
• Strong written and verbal communication, including the ability to explain complex technical decisions clearly to non-engineers

Preferred Qualifications
• Experience in fintech, wealth management, or financial services, with familiarity with trading systems, brokerage platforms, or portfolio management tools
• Experience with Python in a backend or data engineering context
• Experience improving reliability and observability in production systems, including on-call ownership and incident response
• Experience in early-stage or high-growth startup environments where the technical surface area changes quickly
• Comfortable working closely with product and design, and adapting communication style to a range of stakeholders
• Enthusiasm for mentoring engineers and building a high-quality engineering culture

Compensation & Role Details
• Base Salary: $250-300k based on experience
• Equity: Competitive equity package with a 3-year vest and 1-year cliff, reflecting an opportunity to grow with the company at an early and exciting stage
• Hybrid: 3 days per week in our Manhattan office
• Must be authorized to work in the United States
