Imagine a piloted air taxi that takes off vertically, then quietly carries you and your fellow passengers over the congested city streets below, enabling you to spend more time with the people and places that matter most. At Joby, we've been working to make that dream a reality since 2009 and we're now in the final stages of certifying our aircraft with the FAA. With plans to launch our aircraft in the US and Dubai, we're now scaling manufacturing and preparing for the launch of our commercial service.
Overview
Joby Aviation is seeking a talented power electronics engineer to join our team designing electric aircraft. This engineer will work closely with mechanical, software, and other cross-functional teams and contribute towards the design of powertrain systems with a focus on DC/DCs from 0.5-200 kW. This is a hands-on, on-site position based in San Carlos, CA. Engineers are responsible for seeing their projects through from concept design to delivery and support of hardware. Optimizing designs for reliability, weight, and efficiency will be a focus.
Responsibilities
Develop and refine analytical and simulation models of power converters to predict performance, losses, and thermal behavior
Participate in system-level trade studies to evaluate converter topologies, voltage levels, and architectures alongside other powertrain subsystems
Perform hands-on bring-up and debug of power converter hardware in the lab
Create clear and readable schematics for power electronics boards
Collaborate with mechanical engineers to optimize placement of high-power modules, components, and bus bars
Write requirements, create and carry out test and validation plans
Support manufacturing by troubleshooting critical production issues and designing test procedures
Required
B.S. or M.S. in electrical engineering or related discipline with 2–4 years of relevant experience, or Ph.D. with 1-2 years
Strong EE fundamentals, including:
Experience designing and developing power converters in the 10 kW to hundreds of kilowatts range
Magnetics design experience (inductors, transformers) for power conversion applications
Schematic capture and PCB design
Completed (designed/built/tested) high-voltage, high-power designs
Great communication skills
Ability to be onsite regularly in San Carlos, CA
Desired
Ph.D. in relevant discipline with a focus in power electronics
Expertise with optimization of DC/DC converters for high volumetric and gravimetric power density
Expertise in isolated and bidirectional power converter topologies
Experience using simulation tools for hardware and magnetics design (e.g. Ansys, PLECS, Simulink, LTSpice)
Experience in system-level analysis of aircraft or EV powertrains, including co-design of power converters along with system optimization
Experience designing with wide-bandgap semiconductors (SiC, GaN)
Familiarity with Altium Designer
Exposure to AEH design lifecycle and certification (e.g., DO-254, DO-160, aerospace standards)
Experience with model-based design software development for high power, high frequency DC-DC converters
Experience developing embedded software a plus
Experience with HDL development in Verilog and/or VHDL also a plus
Additional Information
Compensation at Joby is a combination of base pay and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs). The target base pay for this position is $124,400 - $160,000/yr. The compensation package will be determined by job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
Joby also offers a comprehensive benefits package, including paid time off, healthcare benefits, a 401(k) plan with a company match, an employee stock purchase plan (ESPP), short-term and long-term disability coverage, life insurance, and more.
Joby is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
