As a Mid to Senior Substation Engineer at QTIB Engineers, you will support the engineering and design of high-voltage and medium-voltage substations from conceptual design through construction and commissioning. Mid-level engineers will independently execute engineering analyses and design tasks, while senior engineers will provide technical leadership, mentor team members, and guide key engineering decisions throughout project execution.

We are seeking engineers with experience in one or more of the following disciplines:
Substation Physical Design
Protection & Control (P&C) Design
Relay Settings

Role Description
The Substation Engineer (Mid-Senior Level) will provide engineering and design services for high-voltage and medium-voltage substations, including physical layouts, equipment specifications, protection and control systems, grounding and lightning protection, and associated engineering studies. Day-to-day responsibilities include preparing calculations and design deliverables, reviewing vendor and contractor documentation, supporting project execution, and ensuring compliance with applicable utility, client, and industry standards.

The role will involve coordinating with project managers, designers, and external stakeholders to support project schedules, budgets, and quality objectives while contributing to a collaborative engineering environment. Depending on experience level, the engineer may also provide technical guidance, mentor junior staff, lead design reviews, and support construction, testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting activities.

Responsibilities
Technical Decision-Making: Take day-to-day responsibility for engineering judgments, design approaches, equipment applications, and technical solutions with a high degree of autonomy.
Engineering Design: Perform detailed engineering and design of high-voltage and medium-voltage substations, including physical layouts, protection and control systems, relay setting development, equipment applications, and associated calculations.
Deliverable Creation: Develop comprehensive engineering packages, including one-line diagrams, relay schematics, wiring diagrams, yard layouts, grounding plans, equipment specifications, calculations, and construction drawing sets.
Engineering Studies & Analysis: Perform and review grounding studies, short-circuit analyses, equipment duty evaluations, protection coordination studies, load flow analyses, voltage drop assessments, arc flash studies, and other substation engineering studies as required.
Workflow Optimization: Establish and refine standard design criteria, engineering templates, calculation tools, and QA/QC procedures to improve project consistency, quality, and efficiency.
Client & Project Coordination: Collaborate with project managers, utility clients, equipment manufacturers, and other stakeholders to define project requirements, maintain technical alignment, and support successful project execution.
Document Review & Compliance: Review vendor drawings, contractor submittals, and technical documentation while ensuring compliance with client standards and applicable industry codes, including IEEE, NESC, NEC, IEC, and utility-specific requirements.
Team Development: Provide technical mentorship, guidance, and QA/QC reviews for junior engineers, designers, and drafting personnel.
Construction & Commissioning Support: Support construction and commissioning activities by resolving field issues, responding to contractor RFIs, reviewing submittals, and assisting with testing and energization efforts.

Qualifications
Education: Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical, Civil, or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program. Electrical Engineering is preferred for Protection & Control and Relay Settings disciplines.
Licensure:
Mid level: Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification is highly preferred
Senior level: Professional Engineer (PE) license is highly preferred
Experience:
Mid level: 3-6 years of progressive experience in substation physical design, P&C design, or relay settings.
Senior level: 6+ years of progressive experience in substation physical design, P&C design, or relay settings, with demonstrated experience leading technical aspects of engineering projects.
Software Mastery: High proficiency in Bluebeam Revu and Microsoft Office Suite. Proficiency with AutoCAD, MicroStation, Bentley Substation, Mathcad, WinIGS, CDEGS, ASPEN OneLiner, ETAP, and SEL acSELerator QuickSet is highly preferred.
Decision-Making Ability: Strong analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills for design, construction, and operational issues.
Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills to write clear technical reports, specifications, and interface effectively with project stakeholders.
