Senior Mechanical & Rotating Equipment Engineer
The Senior Mechanical & Rotating Equipment Engineer is responsible for improving the reliability, availability, and maintainability of critical mechanical assets across the LNG plant. This role provides advanced technical leadership for rotating and static equipment, including compressors, pumps, motors, valves, relief valves, exchangers, engines, and related systems. The position leads failure analysis, root cause investigations, preventive maintenance improvements, equipment health monitoring, and corrective action development to support safe, efficient, and cost-effective operations. The engineer serves as a key technical authority for mechanical reliability, partners closely with Operations and Maintenance, supports turnarounds and emergent troubleshooting, and drives continuous improvement in equipment performance, repair strategies, spare-parts planning, and long-term asset integrity.
Key Responsibilities
Lead reliability improvement efforts for rotating and mechanical equipment, with a focus on sustainable corrective actions and long-term asset performance.
Monitor equipment health and identify emerging issues early through field observation, performance data, and available diagnostic tools.
Perform and lead root cause failure analyses for complex mechanical and rotating equipment problems.
Develop, evaluate, and implement preventive maintenance strategies that reduce downtime and improve equipment availability.
Provide technical direction for repairs, overhauls, temporary repair strategies, and equipment modifications during normal operations and turnarounds.
Collaborate with OEMs, vendors, and internal stakeholders to design, prototype, and implement practical, cost-effective engineering solutions.
Develop and improve spare-parts strategies, common-component usage, and inventory planning for critical equipment.
Support maintenance planning and execution by providing technical guidance on equipment condition, repair scope, and parts readiness.
Lead and facilitate reliability meetings, training efforts, and continuous improvement initiatives focused on mechanical systems.
Mentor less experienced engineers and technical personnel while promoting knowledge sharing and sound engineering practices.
Technical Scope
This role supports a broad range of plant equipment, including mixed refrigerant compressors, regeneration gas compressors, pipeline compressors, boil-off gas compressors, pumps, motors, valves, relief valves, exchangers, engines, and associated piping systems. Typical responsibilities include resolving vibration and pulsation issues, troubleshooting bearing and lubrication failures, evaluating motor ventilation and electrical interface concerns, improving compressor overhaul and repair methods, supporting temporary repair design when needed, and driving corrective action for recurring mechanical failures that threaten plant reliability or production.
Collaboration and Operational Support
The Senior Mechanical & Rotating Equipment Engineer works closely with Operations, Mechanical Maintenance, reliability teams, compliance personnel, and external vendors to support daily plant operation and long-term equipment improvement. The role regularly contributes technical data and recommendations in operational meetings, serves as a point of contact for rotating equipment issues, and provides timely support when priorities shift or emergent stakeholder needs arise. The position is expected to communicate clear expectations, translate technical findings into practical actions, and help align maintenance and operating teams around reliability goals.
Safety, Compliance, and Leadership Expectations
This role is expected to model safe behaviors, promote hazard recognition and risk elimination, and incorporate personnel safety, regulatory compliance, and security requirements into all engineering decisions. The engineer must demonstrate strong ownership of equipment issues, exercise sound judgment under pressure, and provide analytical, thorough leadership in both planned and emergent situations. Success in the role requires balancing reliability, maintenance practicality, production priorities, and cost awareness while maintaining high technical standards and accountability.
Qualifications and Experience
Advanced expertise in mechanical engineering with strong emphasis on rotating equipment reliability and maintenance.
Extensive experience troubleshooting compressors, pumps, motors, valves, exchangers, and associated mechanical systems.
Demonstrated capability in root cause analysis, diagnostics, failure investigation, and development of effective corrective actions.
Experience working with OEMs, contractors, and plant teams to implement equipment improvements and repair solutions.
Strong understanding of preventive maintenance, spare-parts strategy, turnaround support, and equipment life extension practices.
Excellent analytical thinking, decision-making, and problem-solving skills in high-consequence operating environments.
Effective communication skills with the ability to support Operations and Maintenance and explain technical issues clearly.
Ability to mentor junior team members, promote best practices, and contribute to a culture of continuous improvement.
Success Profile
Success in this position is measured by improved equipment reliability and availability, reduced downtime, effective resolution of complex mechanical issues, stronger preventive maintenance practices, well-supported turnarounds, and clear technical leadership across the plant. A strong incumbent in this role is recognized as a trusted technical authority who strengthens plant performance through sound engineering judgment, proactive problem solving, cross-functional partnership, and a sustained commitment to safety and continuous improvement.
