Job Summary

General area of expertise

Surface Well Testing (SWT) is the core area of expertise of SWT Process Engineer.

SWT gather techniques to assess the true reservoir potential at full scale under dynamic conditions. It validates the well performance during cleanup and commissioning and provides reservoir monitoring for better field management. Basically, the effluent received from well head (mixture of oil, gas and water at high pressure) is treated through SWT assets in order to obtain an accurate estimate of the flowrates and compositions of gas, oil and water under dynamic conditions of the reservoir (reservoir put in production during a short period of time). Most often, the three phases are separated, measured (flowrates through on-line measurements, composition through sampling) and disposed in accordance with environmental regulations.

SWT Process Engineer Also Intervenes In The Definition Of Extended Well Test (EWT) Facilities. EWT Share Same Objectives As SWT (basically Testing Of The Well), With Following Differences

EWT is a longer term solution than SWT
EWT is used to generate cash flow from production before bringing a permanent production facility: then the oil and/or the gas might not be burnt but exported under definite (often commercial) specifications.

Furthermore, SWT Process engineer can intervene in the definition of Early Production Facilities (EPF) or Production facilities (PF), where the objective is to produce the well and in particular treat the oil and/or the gas for export. Typically, commercial specification needs to be reached in terms of composition and physical properties.

Role and responsibilities

In all the areas of expertise listed above, the range of responsibilities of SWT Process engineer are:

to elaborate and propose a complete set-up (sequence of several SLB or third-party assets), in order to treat the well head effluent received from well head with definite characteristics (composition, pressure, temperature, water content, etc..). The final objectives can be:
to separate the well effluent phases
measure the flowrates and composition before disposal in accordance with environmental regulations
treat the oil and/or the gas to reach definite specifications for export or disposal
for oil: density, vapor pressure, H2S content, BS&W –
For gas: dew point, specific gravity, H2S content, pressure/temperature
For water: H2S content, Oil content
To design new equipment in order to treat well effluent and any of well effluent phases in order to meet required specifications
To assess existing SLB or third party assets to:
define their operating envelope
define solutions required for debottlenecking or upgrading
verify safety (pressure relief valves, relief lines, setting of alarms and switches)
The SWT Process Engineer Activities Are Driven By

Product requirements: meets desired requirements (flowrates, product qualities) with the best efficient set-up possible
Safety concerns: verification and design of relief systems, including
alarms and switches thresholds in terms of liquid levels, pressures, temperatures, erosion probes, etc..
equipment pressure relief devices (pressures relief valves, ruptures disks, etc.…)
blowdown / depressurization systems
flares network (relief lines and headers) and flaring systems
Environmental concerns:
Design of process systems for treating effluents before disposal
Heat radiation studies around flares
Gas dispersion studies in case of gas flaring and/or relief
The SWT Process Engineer is an effective support to all SLB locations all over the word, in order to provide solutions to meet production and safety requirements.
