Job Title: Mechanical Engineer (Automotive Electronics)
Job Location: Sunnyvale, CA
Job Type: Full Time, Onsite, Monday – Friday
About Us
AUTOMO is a leading autonomous mobility company developing L4 autonomous driving technology and operating Robotaxi fleets. Our mission is to deploy safe, scalable autonomous transportation and transform urban mobility. Our platform integrates full-stack autonomous driving software, sensors, and fleet operations. To scale Robotaxi, we partner with leading automotive OEMs to integrate our autonomous driving system into production vehicles and deploy them in commercial fleets.
We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer with strong experience in thermal and structural design, preferably in automotive electronics or computer server systems. This role focuses on developing robust, high-performance mechanical solutions for the electronic systems of autonomous vehicles and supporting vehicle modification or integration.
Role Overview
The Mechanical Engineer will drive the design and development of mechanical components and assemblies for electronic systems in autonomous vehicles. This role requires expertise in thermal management, structural analysis, and CAD design to ensure reliable, high-performance solutions that meet automotive standards. The candidate will work cross-functionally with electrical, thermal, and manufacturing teams to deliver integrated system solutions.
Key Responsibilities
Design and develop mechanical components and assemblies for electronic systems, including enclosures, mounts, and thermal solutions
Perform CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulations to optimize thermal performance
Conduct structural analysis (FEA) to ensure durability, reliability, and compliance with requirements
Create detailed 3D models and drawings using CAD tools (e.g., SolidWorks, CATIA, NX)
Collaborate with electrical, thermal, and manufacturing teams to ensure integrated system performance
Support prototype builds, testing, and validation activities; analyze test data and iterate designs based on performance results
Work with suppliers and manufacturing teams on DFM (Design for Manufacturability) and DFA (Design for Assembly)
Ensure designs meet regulatory, safety, and environmental standards
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
3+ years of experience in mechanical design for electronics systems
Hands-on experience with CFD analysis tools (e.g., ANSYS Fluent, Icepak, Star-CCM+)
Proficiency in CAD software and 3D modeling
Experience with finite element analysis (FEA) for structural validation
Strong understanding of heat transfer, fluid dynamics, and material properties
Experience with tolerance analysis and GD&T
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in computer hardware or automotive electronics systems
Familiarity with thermal management solutions (heat sinks, vapor chambers, liquid cooling, etc.)
Knowledge of EMI/EMC considerations in mechanical design
Experience with vibration, shock, and environmental testing
Exposure to high-volume manufacturing processes (die casting, stamping, injection molding)
Understanding of automotive standards (e.g., ISO 16750) or server reliability requirements
Key Skills
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
Ability to translate system requirements into practical mechanical designs
Cross-functional collaboration and communication
Detail-oriented with a focus on quality and reliability
Mission Alignment
If you want to be part of a team to accomplish this great mission, we will provide you the best possible platform to do that.
Self-directed: We work best with people that are driven, motivated, and aspire to greatness. Are you the sort of person that, if you had time on your hands, will independently find interesting and useful things to do?
Hungry to learn: We are eager to see you learn new skills and grow. But learning is hard work, and this is something we hope you want to do.
Team orientation: We work in small, fast-moving teams. We don't believe in lone wolves. We watch out for each other and go after big goals together as a team.
Why Join Us
Opportunity to shape the future of autonomous mobility
Work with leading engineers and mobility innovators
