Mechanical Engineer - Space-Based Interceptor Systems
El Segundo, California | On-site
Opportunity Summary
A venture-backed aerospace and defense startup is developing next-generation space-based interceptor systems designed to address emerging national security threats. The team is building advanced flight hardware that combines propulsion, structures, controls, and integrated vehicle systems with a strong emphasis on rapid development, testing, and real-world performance. This role is focused on hands-on mechanical engineering execution across interceptor structures, packaging, prototyping, integration, and test support. The engineer will contribute directly to the development of space-based interceptor (SBI) platforms from early concepts through hardware demonstration and iterative testing. This is an execution-heavy role ideal for someone who enjoys working closely with hardware in a fast-moving engineering environment.
About Us
We are an early-stage aerospace and defense company developing advanced space-based interceptor technologies for national security applications. Our team includes engineers from aerospace, propulsion, autonomy, and defense backgrounds focused on building highly capable systems through rapid iteration and aggressive hardware development. We operate with a strong engineering-first culture where ownership, execution, and collaboration are critical.
Job Duties
Support the design and development of mechanical and structural systems for space-based interceptor platforms
Create CAD models, assemblies, manufacturing drawings, and integration layouts
Assist with vehicle packaging, mounting strategies, brackets, and subsystem integration
Perform structural and mechanical analysis to support hardware reliability and survivability
Support prototype builds, hardware integration, and assembly activities
Participate in testing, troubleshooting, and iterative hardware improvements
Work closely with propulsion, electrical, controls, and aerodynamic engineers during development activities
Assist with material selection and manufacturing coordination for aerospace-grade hardware
Interface with machine shops, fabrication vendors, and suppliers to support hardware production
Build development fixtures, test setups, and prototype hardware as needed
Contribute to hands-on machining, fabrication, and hardware modification efforts
Qualifications
B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related technical field
3+ years of hands-on mechanical engineering experience
Strong CAD experience with mechanical assemblies and integration work
Experience supporting prototype development, hardware integration, or testing
Familiarity with structural analysis and mechanical design fundamentals
Experience working with aerospace-grade materials and manufacturing processes
Comfortable working directly with hardware in a fast-paced engineering environment
Strong communication and collaboration skills across technical teams
