Position Summary
USA Industries is seeking a hands-on Mechanical Design Engineer with experience in industrial product development, manufacturing, and metallurgy.
The successful candidate will design and improve mechanical products used in high-pressure piping applications, including hydrostatic test plugs, pipe isolation equipment, paddle blinds, orifice plates, heat-exchanger plugs, and related tooling and accessories.
This position requires a strong understanding of mechanical design, material behavior, manufacturing processes, and fundamental metallurgical principles. Relevant areas include steel and aluminum alloys, stainless steels, welding, brazing, heat treatment, coatings, metal forming, machining, and other joining or secondary processing methods.
The engineer will participate in projects from concept development through design verification, production release, and field implementation. The position also serves as a technical resource for Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain, Sales, and company management.

Key Responsibilities
Develop new mechanical products and improve existing products used in piping isolation, hydrostatic testing, flow measurement, and heat-exchanger maintenance.
Convert customer, operational, and performance requirements into practical and manufacturable engineering designs.
Develop 3D models, detailed drawings, assemblies, bills of material, and manufacturing documentation using SolidWorks and applicable USA Industries, ISO, ASME, and industry standards.
Perform mechanical design calculations involving stress, pressure loading, bolted joints, threads, seals, hydraulics, heat transfer, material strength, and structural mechanics.
Set up, run, and interpret finite element analysis models, including linear and nonlinear structural analyses when required.
Select appropriate materials based on strength, corrosion resistance, temperature, pressure, wear, manufacturability, cost, and availability.
Provide metallurgical guidance related to carbon steels, alloy steels, stainless steels, aluminum alloys, welding, brazing, heat treatment, surface treatments, and coatings.
Develop engineering specifications, test procedures, fixtures, and test equipment to evaluate new concepts and verify product performance.
Support hydrostatic, mechanical-load, sealing, cycle, proof, and destructive testing as applicable.
Analyze test results and use the findings to improve product performance, safety, reliability, and manufacturability.
Conduct and participate in formal design reviews, risk assessments, verification activities, and design-validation programs.
Work directly with CNC machinists, welders, technicians, inspectors, and production personnel to resolve manufacturing and assembly issues.
Apply Design for Manufacturing and Assembly principles while accounting for available CNC machining, welding, fabrication, inspection, and assembly capabilities.
Review machining methods, tolerances, tooling requirements, material conditions, and process limitations with internal manufacturing personnel and external suppliers.
Support prototype development, first-article production, pre-production builds, and final product release.
Investigate product, manufacturing, supplier, and field-performance issues using structured root-cause analysis and corrective-action methods.
Develop effective engineering countermeasures and document corrective and preventive actions.
Prepare and process Engineering Change Requests, drawing revisions, bills of material, specifications, and supporting technical information.
Maintain complete and accurate project records that demonstrate design inputs, calculations, reviews, verification, validation, and final approval.
Prepare technical reports, design studies, test reports, quality-confirmation documents, operating manuals, service instructions, parts diagrams, and shop documentation.
Communicate technical information clearly to engineering personnel, manufacturing teams, suppliers, customers, and management.
Coordinate with outside suppliers to resolve technical, material, delivery, and quality issues.
Provide technical direction to engineers, CAD designers, technicians, and manufacturing personnel when assigned.
Provide input regarding project schedules, priorities, technical risks, resource requirements, and expected completion dates.
Maintain project task plans and provide weekly progress updates through the company’s project-management and Level 10 processes.
Identify opportunities for new products, improved product features, cost reductions, increased reliability, and competitive differentiation.
Recognize potentially patentable concepts and assist with the documentation and development of intellectual-property submissions.
Follow all applicable quality-system requirements, engineering procedures, safety policies, and document-control processes.

Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, or a closely related engineering field.
Approximately 3+ years of mechanical design or product-development experience in an industrial manufacturing environment.
Proficiency with SolidWorks or comparable 3D CAD software.
Experience creating production-ready models, assemblies, detailed drawings, tolerances, and bills of material.
Working knowledge of engineering drawing practices, GD&T, dimensional tolerancing, metrology, surface-finish specifications, welding symbols, and manufacturing documentation.
Experience performing mechanical calculations and evaluating the strength and performance of components and assemblies.
Experience setting up and interpreting finite element analysis models.
Understanding of metallic materials, including carbon steels, alloy steels, stainless steels, and aluminum alloys.
Familiarity with welding, machining, heat treatment, metal joining, coatings, fabrication, and material-processing methods.
Practical understanding of CNC machining and other common manufacturing equipment and processes.
Ability to troubleshoot product and manufacturing issues using sound engineering judgment and root-cause analysis.
Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
Strong written, verbal, organizational, and technical-documentation skills.
Ability to manage multiple assignments and work effectively with engineering, manufacturing, quality, suppliers, and management.
Willingness to spend time in the manufacturing shop, assembly area, and product-testing environment.

Preferred Qualifications
Experience designing products for high-pressure piping, hydrostatic testing, mechanical isolation, sealing, or flow-control applications.
Familiarity with hydrostatic test plugs, pipe plugs, paddle blinds, orifice plates, bleed rings, heat-exchanger plugs, flanges, or related industrial products.
Experience designing pressure-loaded components, mechanical gripping systems, wedges, cones, seals, threaded assemblies, bolted joints, and custom tooling or fixtures.
Experience with nonlinear FEA, contact analysis, large deformation, elastomeric components, or pressure-assisted mechanical systems.
Knowledge of ASME, API, ASTM, ISO, or other standards applicable to piping, pressure equipment, materials, welding, and mechanical design.
Experience supporting CNC turning, milling, multi-axis machining, welding, waterjet cutting, and prototype manufacturing.
Familiarity with engineering materials and processes such as quenched-and-tempered alloy steels, stainless steels, urethane or elastomer seals, brazing, nitriding, and low-friction or wear-resistant coatings.
Experience developing patents, invention disclosures, or proprietary product features.
Experience working directly with customers or supporting product demonstrations, field testing, or technical training.

What Success Looks Like
The successful candidate will be able to take an engineering problem from initial concept through analysis, detailed design, prototype manufacturing, testing, corrective action, and production release. This person should be comfortable moving between CAD and analysis work, the manufacturing floor, the test area, supplier discussions, and technical documentation.
