Position Summary
We are seeking a hands-on Mechanical Design Engineer to support engineered-to-order valve products and product line development. This role is responsible for reviewing sales orders, interpreting purchase orders and customer specifications, and determining whether an existing valve design can be reconfigured or whether a new valve design is required to meet application requirements. The Mechanical Design Engineer will develop design layouts in Autodesk Inventor, perform the required engineering calculations, prepare technical specifications, and collaborate closely with designers and cross-functional teams to deliver practical, manufacturable valve solutions.
Key Responsibilities
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
· Review sales orders, purchase orders, and customer specifications to define technical requirements and identify design scope.
· Determine whether customer requirements can be met by creating a new version of an existing valve design or by developing a new valve design.
· Interpret product family design requirements to develop new valve sizes, pressure classes, or configurations as needed.
· Create valve design layouts, models, assemblies, and related documentation in Autodesk Inventor.
· Perform engineering and design calculations required to validate form, fit, function, pressure containment, and overall product performance.
· Prepare and maintain product specifications, technical design documentation, and engineering records.
· Work with designers to guide and support the development of detailed design layouts and drawings in Inventor.
· Coordinate with sales, manufacturing, sourcing, and other engineering functions to ensure designs are practical, compliant, and manufacturable.
· Support design reviews, problem solving, and continuous improvement of existing valve products and design standards.
· Ensure designs align with applicable codes, standards, internal requirements, and customer expectations.
· Work with assembly technicians to resolve function issues.
Required Qualifications
· Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering discipline.
· Experience in mechanical design engineering, preferably in industrial valves, pressure-containing equipment, or engineered mechanical products.
· Demonstrated ability to interpret purchase orders, customer specifications, and application requirements and translate them into practical engineering solutions.
· Proficiency in Autodesk Inventor for 3D modeling, layouts, assemblies, and drawing development.
· Strong capability in engineering calculations, design validation, and preparation of technical specifications.
· Working knowledge of valve design principles, mechanical design fundamentals, materials, and manufacturing processes.
· Working knowledge of industry standards such as ASME, API 6A, API 6D and NACE MR0175.
· Ability to evaluate whether a new version of an existing valve design can be created or a new valve design is required.
· Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
· Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate and communicate effectively both internally with engineering, sales, purchasing, and assembly teams and externally with customers, manufacturers, vendors, and certifying authorities.
Preferred Qualifications
· Experience designing new valve sizes, pressure classes, or custom valve configurations.
· Knowledge of applicable industry codes and standards for valves and pressure-containing components.
· Experience supporting engineered-to-order or configure-to-order products.
· Familiarity with design documentation control, bills of material, and manufacturing release processes.
· Experience mentoring or directing designers and drafters in the development of mechanical layouts and drawings.
Core Competencies
· Hands-on engineering judgment
· Mechanical aptitude and design ownership
· Order and specification interpretation
· Valve product design and reconfiguration
· Engineering analysis and calculation
· CAD modeling and layout development
· Technical writing and specification development
· Cross-functional collaboration
· Attention to detail and execution
This position is ideal for an engineer who combines strong mechanical design fundamentals with practical product judgment and a collaborative working style. The successful candidate will be comfortable owning design decisions, developing new or modified valve solutions, and partnering with designers to bring concepts into complete and accurate Inventor layouts and specifications.
