Mechanical Design Engineer – Scientific Applications
Requirement: Must be a U.S. Citizen
Position Summary
The Mechanical Design Engineer leads the full lifecycle development of advanced products and systems used in fiber‑optic and optical scientific applications. This role drives projects from concept and feasibility through detailed design, prototyping, validation, and transition to manufacturing—ensuring performance, reliability, and cost targets are met.
Working in a highly specialized scientific and precision‑manufacturing environment, the engineer applies strong mechanical design fundamentals, material science knowledge, and system‑level thinking to solve complex technical challenges involving precision alignment, environmental constraints, and repeatability.
The position requires close collaboration with Manufacturing, Process Engineering, Quality, and Supply Chain to ensure smooth industrialization. Responsibilities include design reviews, verification and validation activities, and maintaining robust engineering documentation aligned with industry standards.
This role also contributes to innovation and continuous improvement by integrating advanced manufacturing methods (including additive manufacturing) and optimizing designs for manufacturability and performance. Strong project management skills are essential, as the engineer manages multiple initiatives and technical priorities.
Ideal candidates are hands‑on, technically strong, and comfortable balancing theoretical design with practical implementation in a dynamic, precision‑focused environment.
Key Responsibilities
Lead product development from concept through validation and production release
Design mechanical systems, tooling, fixtures, and equipment
Select materials and components appropriate for optical and scientific applications
Apply DFM, DFA, and performance‑driven design principles
Conduct design reviews, verification, and validation activities
Manage project timelines, deliverables, and technical priorities
Collaborate with cross‑functional teams across engineering and operations
Maintain engineering documentation, drawings, and BOMs
Drive continuous improvement and innovation initiatives
Support troubleshooting, root‑cause analysis, and corrective actions
Maintain document control responsibilities
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
5–10 years of mechanical design engineering experience
Proven experience in product development and project management
Strong knowledge of machining, manufacturing processes, and fabrication methods
Advanced proficiency in CAD
Experience with Autodesk Inventor or willingness to complete training
Deep understanding of GD&T principles
Impact & Success Metrics (First 6–12 Months)
Lead new product development programs from concept to production release
Deliver designs that meet performance, cost, and manufacturability goals
Reduce design iteration cycles through strong upfront engineering
Drive cross‑functional alignment for smooth product industrialization
Improve product reliability and performance through design enhancements
Introduce innovative design or manufacturing approaches that create measurable value
