Mechanical Design and Development Engineer
Location: Rincon, GA
Department: Engineering
Reports To: Engineering Manager
On the heels of achieving 3X growth, Virginia Transformer is hiring to do it again!
We’re strategically building our team for the next 3X growth cycle — a phase that is both intense and incredibly rewarding. We’re highly selective about who joins us, because this journey isn’t for everyone.
If you have the drive, grit, and desire to learn in a high-performance environment — and you want to grow your career 3X alongside the Company’s growth — we’d love to talk.
Who We Are
Virginia Transformer is the largest U.S.-owned producer of power transformers in North America, with over 50 years of experience delivering premium-quality solutions with some of the shortest lead times in the industry.
With more than 5,800 employees, we are a privately held, engineering-driven company known for our nimbleness, innovation, and tenacity.
Join Our Team
If you’re excited by hands-on engineering, working closely with manufacturing, and contributing to products that power critical infrastructure like data centers and the U.S. electric grid — this is the place to build your career.
Position Overview
We are seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer I with 1–2 years of experience (or strong internship/co-op experience) to support the design and development of transformer components in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
This is a hands-on, learning-focused role where you will work alongside experienced engineers and manufacturing teams to develop practical, manufacturable designs while building your technical foundation.
Key Responsibilities
Support mechanical design of transformer components and assemblies
Create and modify detailed drawings and models using CAD tools
Assist with engineering calculations including basic stress, thermal, and tolerance analysis
Support the design and development of tools, fixtures, and manufacturing aids
Work closely with manufacturing teams to ensure designs are practical and manufacturable
Assist in troubleshooting production and design issues on the shop floor
Participate in prototype builds, testing, and validation activities
Maintain and update engineering documentation, drawings, and bills of materials
Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives focused on quality and efficiency
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
1–2 years of experience in mechanical design or manufacturing (internships/co-ops strongly considered)
Exposure to a manufacturing or production environment
Basic proficiency in CAD software (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or similar)
Familiarity with engineering calculations and fundamentals (mechanics, materials, thermodynamics)
Strong willingness to learn and work in a hands-on, fast-paced environment
Ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams including manufacturing and quality
Preferred Qualifications
Internship or co-op experience in manufacturing, heavy industry, or equipment design
Exposure to tools, fixtures, or production support work
Basic understanding of fabrication processes (machining, welding, assembly)
Interest in power systems, transformers, or industrial equipment
What Success Looks Like
Quickly develops strong technical and manufacturing understanding
Produces accurate drawings and supports design work effectively
