Basic Qualifications
Strong knowledge of three or more of the following: nonferrous metals, composite materials and structural systems, additive manufacturing, elastomers, epoxies, thin films / coatings, fracture mechanics, fatigue, or manufacturing processes
Strong technical writing, communication, project and time management skills
Demonstrated ability to interpret and develop detailed test requirements from varying degrees of maturity to properly specify load, deflection, constraints and degrees of freedom, thermal, and functional environments and measurements
Demonstrating the ability to remain organized in a fast-paced environment, supporting multiple simultaneous objectives
Demonstrated ability to become a certified test conductor, acting as the person in charge who is accountable to multi-disciplinary teams, successfully applying test knowledge and execution discipline, and validating processes
Job Description
We are seeking a Materials Test Engineer to provide technical support and experience to plan, prepare, and execute testing of development and flight aerospace materials at the Materials Technology & Mechanisms Test Lab at Lockheed Martin Space.
In this position, you will coordinate and interface directly with program engineering, production colleagues, technicians, quality, planners, and others to support all stages of the product life cycle for aerospace materials used in structural, thermal protection and various other applications. A successful candidate is a self-starter with strong knowledge in material specifications, manufacturing and processes, thermal processing, and mechanical testing as they apply to aerospace materials science. A successful candidate has demonstrated the ability to learn and apply solutions to difficult engineering and operational challenges, via action both independently and in a team environment. This is a hands-on position operating in a laboratory environment developing and executing test solutions that support development, qualification, acceptance, or investigation of products used in human / robotic space exploration, navigation, communications, and national security.
Desired Skills
Prior related practicable field, shop, or factory experience
Relevant professional experience or Master of Science degree in Materials Science or related discipline
Working knowledge of ASTM testing, LabVIEW, environmental testing (load / deflection, thermal and thermal vacuum), MATLAB, etc
Familiarity and comfort operating and troubleshooting equipment including servo-hydraulic / electro-mechanical load frames, instrumentation / data acquisition
Knowledge in test script development, data processing techniques, and formal writing of procedural instructions and data reports
Demonstrated experience and commitment to knowledge continuity and continuous process improvement
Demonstrated ability to design (CREO preferred) and analyze standard and creative solutions for coupons and configurations to be fabricated and set-up
Strong ability to carefully identify, explain, and resolve anomalous conditions as well as nominal deliverable data
