Vision Point Systems is seeking a material mechanical testing engineer with 0-3 years of experience working in a mechanical testing laboratory environment with a primary focus on metallic alloys. This position will primarily support the Physical Metallurgy branch at the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division and concentrate on investigations of Naval structural and component alloy systems, such as high-strength steel, aluminum, nickel-aluminum-bronze, and/or titanium alloys. Primary duties would include conducting laboratory tests of metallic materials which include, but not limited to, tensile, compression, Charpy impact, dynamic tear, compact tension, high and low-cycle fatigue, rotating cantilever beam, and raising-step-load SCC tests.
Primary Responsibilities:
Prepare samples for mechanical tests
Run hydraulic load frames and other mechanical testing equipment to conduct testing
Evaluate test specimens after testing, analyze data, and generate reports
Coordinate the purchasing of laboratory consumables and equipment
Help maintain the mechanical testing lab and equipment including troubleshooting and repair of unique test fixtures
Help develop test plans and programs
Requirements
Minimum Bachelor's degree in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgy or other similar field from an accredited university or college
0-3 years of applicable experience
Must be willing to travel occasionally to support projects for the physical metallurgy branch
Must be detail oriented, think critically about the work, and enjoy hands-on technical tasks with precision equipment
Must be able to work independently and within a small team
Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret Security Clearance within an efficient timeframe to meet client requirements. Preference will be given to candidates who are already cleared
US Citizenship required
Desired skills:
Hands-on experience involving repairing, assembling, and maintaining machinery or mechanical systems
Basic familiarity and understanding of solid mechanics, fatigue and fracture behavior, fractography and failure analysis principles
Hands-on experience with light optical microscopy and using a scanning electron microscope
Experience with computer aided modeling (CAD), finite element modeling/analysis (FEA/FEM).
