JOB DESCRIPTION
Lighting Design Engineer
Entry-Level | Engineering Development Track
Location: Tampa, Florida (on-site)
Department: Engineering
Reports to: Chief Technology Officer
Employment type: Full-time, exempt
About Streetleaf
Streetleaf is a Tampa-based technology company delivering solar-powered, off-grid street lighting solutions to municipalities, developers, utilities, and commercial customers across North America. Our products eliminate trenching, wiring, and grid dependency — giving customers a faster, more sustainable, and more cost-effective path to safe, well-lit roadways, communities, and properties.
We are growing quickly, and we are building an in-house engineering team to ensure every project delivers the best possible value to our customers.
Position Summary
The Lighting Design Engineer is a newly created role on the Streetleaf engineering team. We are looking for a highly motivated recent college graduate in Mechanical Engineering or Civil Engineering who we will train and develop into a recognized expert in street lighting design.
In this role, you will design lighting solutions that combine Streetleaf's product portfolio with each customer's specific site conditions, performance requirements, and budget — with the goal of delivering the best overall value. You will work directly with sales, project managers, and customers throughout the design process, and your work will directly shape what gets installed in the field.
This is a hands-on development role. You will receive structured mentorship, training on photometric design software, exposure to industry standards (IES, IDA, AASHTO, ANSI/IES RP-8), and a clear path to becoming Streetleaf's go-to lighting design expert.
Key Responsibilities
• Lighting design — Produce photometric layouts and lighting design packages for roadway, parking lot, pathway, perimeter, and area lighting projects using Streetleaf's solar lighting products.
• Requirements analysis — Translate customer requirements (illuminance levels, uniformity, pole spacing, mounting heights, dark-sky compliance, local code) into engineered design solutions.
• Value optimization — Balance product selection, pole spacing, fixture configuration, and site constraints to deliver the optimal combination of performance, cost, and constructability.
• Design documentation — Prepare professional deliverables including site plans, photometric reports, point-by-point calculations, fixture schedules, and bills of materials.
• Software & tools — Learn and apply industry-standard lighting design tools (AGi32, Visual, DIALux, or similar) and CAD platforms (AutoCAD, Civil 3D) to produce design output.
• Customer collaboration — Participate in customer calls and site walks to gather requirements, present designs, and explain trade-offs in a clear, professional manner.
• Cross-functional support — Work closely with Sales, Operations, and Product teams to support quoting, project hand-offs, and installation guidance.
• Continuous improvement — Contribute to design templates, internal standards, and best practices as Streetleaf scales its design capabilities.
Required Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or Civil Engineering (recent graduate; 0–2 years of experience).
• Strong fundamentals in engineering problem-solving, geometry, and quantitative analysis.
• Proficiency with AutoCAD or a similar 2D drafting/CAD platform (coursework or project experience acceptable).
• Comfort with Microsoft Excel and the broader Microsoft 365 suite.
• Clear written and verbal communication skills — able to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
• High attention to detail and a commitment to producing accurate, professional design deliverables.
• Self-starter mindset with the willingness to learn an entirely new domain (street lighting and photometrics) from the ground up.
• Authorized to work in the United States.
Preferred Qualifications
• Coursework, internship, or project experience involving site design, civil layout, illumination, or solar/electrical systems.
• Exposure to photometric design software (AGi32, Visual, DIALux) or a strong interest in learning it.
• Familiarity with IES, IDA, AASHTO, or municipal lighting standards.
• EIT certification or progress toward the FE exam.
• Experience reading civil/site plans or working with GIS tools.
What We Offer
• Development path — Structured training, mentorship from senior leadership (including the CTO), and a defined growth track toward becoming a Streetleaf lighting design expert.
• Real ownership — Your designs go into the real world. You will see your work installed on roads, parking lots, and communities.
• Mission-driven work — Help expand sustainable, off-grid lighting infrastructure across North America.
• Compensation — Competitive base salary, performance bonus, health benefits, and PTO.
• Location — Modern Tampa Bay area office; collaborative, fast-paced team environment.
How to Apply
Submit your resume, an unofficial transcript, and a brief note (a few sentences is fine) explaining why you are interested in developing your career in street lighting design at Streetleaf.
Streetleaf is an equal opportunity employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees.
